What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Gotu Kola against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Gotu Kola by Herb Pharm
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: gotu kola aerial parts extract, a liquid herbal preparation derived from the above-ground portions of the gotu kola plant. The extract also includes cane alcohol and distilled water as inactive ingredients to deliver it.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for gotu kola is mixed. It's rated possibly effective for venous insufficiency (poor blood circulation in the legs) and burns.
For radiation dermatitis (skin damage from cancer treatment), it's rated possibly ineffective. For cognitive function and Alzheimer's disease, the evidence isn't strong enough yet to rate it either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Gotu kola is generally well tolerated in the short term, though the quality of safety data is limited. The most common side effects taken by mouth are stomach irritation and nausea; applied to skin, it may occasionally cause eczema or allergic contact dermatitis.
Rare but serious liver toxicity has been reported in at least four cases, though it's unclear whether gotu kola was the actual cause — contamination or the dose used couldn't be ruled out. One clinical trial monitoring liver function found no changes with 120 mg daily for 6 months.
The product contains cane alcohol, which matters if you're avoiding alcohol. There isn't enough safety data to recommend gotu kola during pregnancy or breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you if either applies.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, confirm with your doctor or pharmacist that it's safe alongside any CNS depressants (sedating drugs like sleep aids, benzodiazepines, and opioids) — gotu kola may intensify their effects. Also check if you take any hepatotoxic drugs (medications known to stress the liver), as there's a theoretical additive risk, though the evidence is limited.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Gotu Kola by Herb Pharm may help with leg circulation or wound healing, though the evidence is modest. If you take sedating medications or drugs that affect your liver, check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding it.
Stomach upset is possible, and liver concerns have been reported — though rare, it's worth knowing. Run your specific medications through the interaction checker on this page before you start.
