Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: gotu kola, supplied as a dried herb extract in liquid form. The extract is suspended in 60% grain alcohol and purified water.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Gotu Kola has possibly effective evidence for venous insufficiency (poor circulation in the legs and feet) and burns. For radiation dermatitis, cognitive function, Alzheimer disease, and generalized anxiety disorder, the evidence is insufficient or points toward ineffectiveness — so we can't yet say whether it works for those uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Gotu kola is generally well tolerated in the short term, but quality evidence is limited. The most common side effects taken by mouth are gastric irritation and nausea.
A rare but serious concern is liver toxicity — four case reports exist, though contaminants in those products weren't ruled out, and one trial at 120 mg daily for six months showed no liver changes. Because of insufficient safety data, the facts advise against use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before starting gotu kola, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, antianxiety drugs, opioids, or antihistamines used for sleep) or any hepatotoxic drugs (medications known to affect liver function). Either class could have an unwanted interaction.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you have venous insufficiency or a burn wound, gotu kola may be worth discussing with your doctor or pharmacist. However, if you take any sedative, sleep aid, anxiety medication, opioid, or drug that stresses your liver, check first — gotu kola can amplify sedation and may add to liver strain.

Gotu Kola Dried Herb Extract by Herbs Etc. Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Gotu Kola Dried Herb Extract by Herbs Etc. does interact with medications — specifically through its gotu kola content, which affects central nervous system depressants and drugs that stress the liver.
The most serious concern is with CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications, opioids, and similar drugs): gotu kola may amplify their sedating effects, which could leave you drowsy, impaired, or at risk if you need to stay alert.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
It also interacts with hepatotoxic drugs — medications that can strain your liver — and taking gotu kola alongside them might compound that burden. While the evidence linking gotu kola itself to liver damage is limited (only four case reports, and contaminants weren't ruled out), caution is warranted if your medication already carries liver risk.
Alternatively check your exact medications with our search tool below. If you take any CNS depressant or any drug known to affect liver function, run them through before starting this product.
