HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Gotu Kola Vanilla Flavor by TerraVita
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: gotu kola glycerite liquid extract, a plant-based remedy traditionally used for circulation and skin healing. The extract is prepared in glycerin with vanilla flavoring added for taste.
There are no other active ingredients.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Gotu kola has the most support for venous insufficiency (poor circulation in the legs) and burns — both rated possibly effective. For radiation dermatitis (skin damage from cancer treatment), cognitive function, and Alzheimer disease, the evidence either points to it being ineffective or is too thin to call.
There simply isn't enough reliable data yet on how it works for generalized anxiety disorder.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Gotu kola is generally well tolerated in the short term, though quality evidence is limited. The most common side effects taken by mouth are stomach upset and nausea.
Rare but serious concern is liver toxicity — there are four case reports, though it's unclear whether gotu kola itself was responsible, and one study of 120 mg daily for six months showed no liver damage. Pregnancy safety data is thin; the available evidence suggests it may be safe, but to be cautious, talk it over with your doctor.
Safety during breastfeeding is unknown, so it's best to avoid it if you're nursing until you've checked with your healthcare provider.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take sedatives, sleep aids, anxiety medications, pain relievers, or any drug your doctor has told you is hard on the liver. Gotu kola may increase drowsiness and theoretically add to liver strain.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Gotu Kola by TerraVita may help with leg circulation or minor burns if the evidence holds up for your situation. It's worth considering if you're dealing with venous insufficiency, but steer clear if you take sedatives or blood pressure medications without checking first — and skip it if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or have liver concerns.
Talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist before you start.

Gotu Kola Vanilla Flavor by TerraVita Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Gotu Kola Vanilla Flavor by TerraVita contains gotu kola extract, which interacts with two medication categories.
The most serious concerns are with CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, pain relievers, anxiety medications) — gotu kola may boost their sedative effects and make you drowsier or more impaired than expected. It also theoretically poses a risk with hepatotoxic drugs (medications that can stress the liver) through additive liver damage, though the evidence here is limited to four case reports and it's unclear whether gotu kola was the sole cause.

Altogether, these interactions span 580 individual medications.
Before you start gotu kola, check your exact medications with the search tool on this page. If you take anything for anxiety, sleep, pain, or depression — or any drug your doctor has flagged as hard on the liver — run it through first and talk it over with your own doctor or pharmacist.
