What’s inside

Low disclosure
Ingredient Transparency · database check
Low

Most active ingredients don't disclose an individual amount — you can't tell how much of each you're getting.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 3 active ingredients.
  • “whole Adrenal” is listed as a grouped ingredient — the label gives one combined amount (250 mg) without saying how much of each component you get.

Grassfed Adrenal contains 3 active ingredients: whole Adrenal (a blend of adrenal tissue components), Liver, and Adrenal Cortex and Adrenal Medulla (the outer and inner layers of the adrenal gland). The product also contains gelatin as an inactive ingredient (the capsule material).

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Liver Extract product and its label doesn't state a use — see Liver Extract's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for liver extract in chronic fatigue syndrome (exhaustion that doesn't improve with rest) is rated possibly ineffective in our data. For hepatitis C, the evidence is insufficient — we don't have enough reliable data to say whether it helps.

There are no effectiveness ratings on file for the adrenal components, so we cannot say what the evidence shows for those.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

No adverse reactions have been reported with liver extract in the data we hold, but a thorough safety study hasn't been done. There is concern about contamination — liver extract comes from raw animal liver from slaughterhouses, and there's a theoretical risk that liver from cows in countries where BSE (mad cow disease) has occurred could be contaminated with diseased tissue (including Great Britain, France, The Netherlands, Portugal, Luxembourg, Ireland, Switzerland, Oman, and Belgium).

No human cases of BSE from contaminated liver extract have been reported, but until more is known, the safety data advises choosing products from countries where BSE hasn't been reported. Liver extract can deliver very high levels of vitamin A and iron.

The safety data advises against liver products in pregnancy because of the risk to a developing baby from excess vitamin A. We hold no specific pregnancy or breastfeeding safety data for Adrenal Cortex or Adrenal Medulla — talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice if you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding.

Minor only

Only Minor-severity interactions are documented for these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Liver Extract.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Minor.
  • Some involve high-stakes drug classes: anticoagulant / antiplatelet drugs.
  • For scale: 3 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Check with your pharmacist if you take warfarin (Coumadin) — a blood thinner — or any iron supplements or iron-containing medications before starting this product. The liver component could affect how warfarin works and increase iron in your body.

General Statements

For most of human history, we consumed the whole animal (nose-to-tail) with deep respect and profound purpose. For instance, Native Americans and early ancestral healers believed that eating the organs from a healthy animal would strengthen and support the health of the corresponding organ of the individual - also known as "like supports like." The traditional way of treating a person with a weak heart was to feed the person the heart of a healthy animal. Since we've abandoned these ways, the modern world has left us malnourished with an epidemic of declining health. The solution is to find ways to recreate our ancestral environment (sleep, nourishment, movement, sunshine, etc). It's time we honor our ancestors by putting back in, what the modern world has left out 9to return our people back to strength, health and happiness). We walk our talk and we offer a one-of-a-kind "guided" experience. Learn more at www.ancestralsupplements.com Brain Johnson "Liver king"

Iron

Liver extract can contain heme iron. Taking liver extract with iron-containing medications or supplements may increase total iron intake and could increase the risk of gastrointestinal adverse effects or excessive iron accumulation. The risk is greater with high doses, prolonged use, or in individuals with hemochromatosis or another iron-overload disorder. Review the iron content of the liver extract and the total elemental iron dose. Avoid unnecessary duplicate iron supplementation and consider monitoring ferritin and transferrin saturation when clinically appropriate.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Warfarin (Coumadin)

Liver extract products may contain small and variable amounts of vitamin K. Theoretically, starting, stopping, or substantially changing the amount of liver extract used could reduce the anticoagulant effect of warfarin and lower the INR. However, this interaction has not been directly studied or reported in humans, and the vitamin K content of liver extract products is generally not standardized. Consider monitoring the INR after a meaningful change in liver extract use.

Grassfed Adrenal by Ancestral Supplements: Common Questions

Does Grassfed Adrenal by Ancestral Supplements interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Grassfed Adrenal has a known interaction with 3 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Grassfed Adrenal contains 3 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
The safety data advises against liver products in pregnancy because they can deliver very high vitamin A, which may harm a developing baby. We have no safety data on file for the adrenal components in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Does this actually help with fatigue or adrenal issues?
For chronic fatigue syndrome, liver extract is rated possibly ineffective in our data. We don't have effectiveness ratings for the adrenal components themselves. The evidence isn't established, so talk with your pharmacist about whether this is right for your situation.
What are the main side effects?
No adverse reactions have been reported in the data we hold. However, a complete safety study hasn't been done. Because it contains iron and vitamin A, taking it with iron supplements or in very high doses could cause stomach upset or iron buildup in your body.
Is this sourced safely?
There's concern about contamination — liver extract comes from raw animal liver from slaughterhouses, and theoretically could contain disease if sourced from cows in countries where BSE (mad cow disease) has occurred. No human cases from contaminated products have been reported, but the safety data recommends choosing products from BSE-free countries when possible.
What exactly is in each capsule?
Each capsule contains whole Adrenal (a blend of adrenal tissue), Liver, and separate Adrenal Cortex and Adrenal Medulla components, plus gelatin as the capsule material. We cannot provide additional detail on the exact amounts or potency of each ingredient from the facts on file.
