HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Green Energy Blend by Swanson
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Green Energy Blend contains three active ingredients: alfalfa grass, barley grass, and wheat grass. These are concentrated plant extracts often marketed for general energy and wellness support, though their effectiveness varies.
The product also includes inactive ingredients — pullulan, microcrystalline cellulose, and calcium palmitate — which are fillers and binders that help form the capsule.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence is mixed. Barley grass is likely effective for high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia) and heart disease prevention.
Alfalfa grass, however, has insufficient evidence to rate it for diabetes, indigestion (dyspepsia), high cholesterol, or menopausal symptoms — the studies just aren't there yet. Wheat grass has no effectiveness data on file.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Alfalfa grass is generally well tolerated in small amounts, but as a concentrated supplement it carries real cautions. The most common side effects are abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, and bloating — a small number of people experienced these in case reports.
Rarely, chronic use has been linked to a lupus-like syndrome and dermatitis. Alfalfa has estrogen-like activity and should be avoided in supplement form during pregnancy; there isn't enough data to say breastfeeding is safe.
Barley grass is usually well tolerated but contains gluten and can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive people, from rash to anaphylaxis in rare cases. Pregnancy and breastfeeding safety data for barley supplements are limited.
Wheat grass safety data are limited overall, and it should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to lack of information.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Before taking Green Energy Blend, double-check with your pharmacist if you take warfarin or another blood thinner (Major interaction with alfalfa). Also ask about photosensitizing medications, contraceptive pills, estrogen therapy, immunosuppressants, diabetes drugs, or triclabendazole — all have documented moderate interactions with one or more ingredients in this product.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you take warfarin or other blood thinners, contraceptive pills, hormone therapy, diabetes or immune-suppressing medications, or triclabendazole, check with your pharmacist before starting this blend — interactions are documented. Anyone allergic to grains or gluten should be cautious with barley grass.
Pregnant or breastfeeding women should skip it. For most others, the main risk is digestive upset.

Green Energy Blend by Swanson Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Green Energy Blend by Swanson contains three grass-based ingredients, and alfalfa grass carries several documented interactions with medications.
The most serious is with warfarin (Coumadin), a blood thinner — alfalfa is high in vitamin K, which can reduce warfarin's anticoagulant activity and potentially raise your blood clot risk.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Alfalfa also interacts moderately with photosensitizing drugs (medications that make your skin more sun-sensitive), contraceptive pills, estrogen hormone therapy, immunosuppressants (drugs that dampen your immune system), and antidiabetes medications. With blood sugar drugs, alfalfa might increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
Barley grass has one documented moderate interaction: it may reduce the effectiveness of triclabendazole (Egaten), a medication for certain parasitic infections. We could not check wheat grass — it holds no monograph data for interactions.
Altogether, these interactions span 578 individual medications. Use the interaction checker below with your exact medications before starting this product.

For each ingredient in Green Energy Blend with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Pines organic Alfalfa Grass
Warfarin (Coumadin)
Theoretically, alfalfa might reduce the anticoagulant activity of warfarin.
Alfalfa contains a large amount of vitamin K. This could theoretically interfere with the activity of warfarin.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, alfalfa might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal research suggests that alfalfa decreases blood sugar in diabetic mice. Also, in one case report, a diabetic patient experienced hypoglycemia after consuming alfalfa extract. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary.
Contraceptive Drugs
Theoretically, alfalfa might interfere with the activity of contraceptive drugs.
Alfalfa contains coumestrol, a phytoestrogen, and isoflavonoids, which have estrogenic effects.
Estrogens
Theoretically, alfalfa might interfere with hormone therapy.
Alfalfa contains coumestrol, a phytoestrogen, and isoflavonoids, which have estrogenic effects.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, alfalfa might decrease the efficacy of immunosuppressive therapy.
In vitro research and human case reports suggest that alfalfa may have immunostimulant effects.
Photosensitizing Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of alfalfa with photosensitizing drugs might have additive effects.
Animal research suggests that excessive doses of alfalfa may increase photosensitivity, possibly due to its chlorophyll content. It is unclear if this effect would be clinically relevant in humans.
Pines organic Barley Grass
Triclabendazole (Egaten)
Theoretically, barley might decrease the clinical effects of triclabendazole.
Animal research suggests that a diet supplemented with barley can reduce the bioavailability of triclabendazole when taken concomitantly. This effect has not been shown in humans.
