The evidence for guduchi is mixed. Clinical research in adults with type 2 diabetes shows it can reduce fasting blood sugar and a marker of long-term blood sugar control (glycated hemoglobin), making it possibly effective for diabetes.
For other conditions — hay fever, asthma, athletic performance, cancer, and hepatitis — there isn't enough reliable evidence to say whether it works. The data we hold doesn't cover those claims.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
When taken by mouth, guduchi is generally well tolerated, though some people report headache or nasal pain in trials. The main safety concern is liver injury — it's rare, but serious cases including autoimmune hepatitis, acute hepatitis, worsening existing liver disease, and even acute liver failure have been reported after 42 to 90 days of use.
In one case series, two patients needed a liver transplant and four died. Because of this risk, use it carefully and only under guidance.
Guduchi is not safe in pregnancy — the data advises against it. There also isn't enough reliable safety information to recommend it while breastfeeding, so it's best to avoid it then.

Guduchi also theoretically may increase blood levels of drugs processed through several liver pathways (CYP2D6, CYP2C19, CYP1A2, and CYP2C9 substrates). In lab studies, guduchi extract blocked these pathways at high concentrations, though this hasn't been confirmed in humans.
One animal study did show guduchi reduced clearance and raised blood levels of glyburide, a diabetes drug. Additionally, guduchi may reduce the effectiveness of immunosuppressants (drugs that lower immunity), since it has immune-boosting effects in laboratory and animal research.

Guduchi powder
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, Tinospora cordifolia might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Clinical research in adults with type 2 diabetes shows that Tinospora cordifolia can reduce fasting blood glucose and glycated hemoglobin. Additionally, animal research shows that Tinospora cordifolia has hypoglycemic effects.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, Tinospora cordifolia might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research shows that Tinospora cordifolia extract inhibits CYP1A2 at high concentrations. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates
Theoretically, Tinospora cordifolia might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C19.
In vitro research shows that Tinospora cordifolia extract inhibits CYP2C19 at high concentrations. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, Tinospora cordifolia might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
In vitro research shows that Tinospora cordifolia extract inhibits CYP2C9. Animal research shows that Tinospora cordifolia extract 400 mg/kg twice daily for 14 days reduces the clearance and increases plasma levels of glyburide, a CYP2C9 substrate. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates
Theoretically, Tinospora cordifolia might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro research shows that Tinospora cordifolia extract inhibits CYP2D6 at high concentrations. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, Tinospora cordifolia might reduce the effectiveness of immunosuppressants.
In vitro and animal research shows that Tinospora cordifolia has immunostimulant effects.
