Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Herbadiet Holy Basil Extract is a 2-ingredient capsule containing holy basil and holy basil extract as the active ingredients. The capsule itself is made from vegetable cellulose.
These are the components driving any potential effects—the vegetable cellulose shell is just the capsule material.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for holy basil's effectiveness is not well established in the data we hold. The facts list six uses—generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), asthma, headache, respiratory tract infections, dental plaque, and diabetes—but all of them have insufficient reliable evidence to rate.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the studies aren't strong enough yet to say either way.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Holy basil extract is generally well tolerated in the short term, but we don't have high-quality long-term safety data. The most common side effects when taken by mouth are loose stools and nausea—a small number of trial participants experienced these.
It's not meant for pregnancy or breastfeeding: animal data raise safety concerns for pregnancy, and there isn't enough reliable information for breastfeeding, so both are advised against.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this if you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin or aspirin), diabetes medications, or pentobarbital or other sedatives. All three drug types have moderate interactions documented with holy basil.
No interactions are documented for ingredients we could not check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Holy Basil Extract by Herbadiet is an option if you're interested in trying it for anxiety, asthma, or another of its traditional uses—just know the evidence isn't strong yet. If you take blood thinners, diabetes drugs, or sedatives, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this; the interactions are theoretical but documented.
It's not for pregnancy or breastfeeding. A conversation with your own healthcare provider will help you decide if it's right for you.

Holy Basil Extract by Herbadiet Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herbadiet Holy Basil Extract does interact with medications, so you'll want to check your prescriptions before starting.
The main concern is with blood thinners (anticoagulants) and antiplatelet drugs—holy basil may increase bleeding risk, though this is based on animal studies and hasn't been confirmed in people yet.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
It also has moderate interactions with diabetes medications. Holy basil can lower blood sugar, and small studies show it does decrease fasting glucose levels in type 2 diabetes.
If you're on insulin or other diabetes drugs, there's a theoretical risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when combined.
One more: pentobarbital (Nembutal), a sedative barbiturate, may have its effects intensified by holy basil, again based on animal data. We don't have human confirmation yet, and it's unclear if this applies to other sedatives or barbiturates.
Altogether, these interactions span 212 individual medications. Use the medication checker below to see if any of yours are affected.

Holy Basil
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, holy basil seed oil might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Animal research shows that holy basil seed oil can prolong bleeding time, possibly due to inhibition of platelet aggregation. However, it is not known if this occurs in humans.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, holy basil might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Small clinical studies show that taking holy basil can decrease fasting blood glucose and other measures of glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Pentobarbital (Nembutal)
Theoretically, holy basil seed oil might increase the sedative effects of pentobarbital.
Animal research shows that holy basil seed oil increases pentobarbitone-induced sleeping time. However, it is not known if this occurs in humans or if this applies to other barbiturates or sedatives.
