HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Holy Basil Leaf by Gaia Herbs
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Partial disclosure
This product contains 2 active ingredients: organic holy basil leaf and a supercritical CO2 extract of holy basil. Both are forms of the same plant; the extract is a concentrated version made without solvents.
Holy basil is an herb traditionally used to support stress and wellness. The capsules also contain inactive ingredients — vegetable glycerin, sunflower lecithin, water, a vegan capsule, and olive oil — which help deliver and stabilize the active ingredients.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for holy basil isn't established yet in the data we hold. The product is used for anxiety, asthma, headache, respiratory infections, dental plaque, and diabetes, but clinical trials so far haven't provided reliable evidence that it works for any of those.
That doesn't mean it's ineffective — it means more research is needed to say for sure.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Holy basil extract is generally well tolerated in the short term, but long-term safety data in humans are limited. The most common side effects when taken by mouth are loose stools and nausea — a small number of trial participants experienced these.
The safety data advise against use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on blood thinners (anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs), diabetes medications, or pentobarbital (a sedative). All are moderate-severity interactions.
Altogether, these interactions span 212 individual medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glancePartially disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Holy basil might appeal to you if you're interested in herbal support for stress or wellness, but the evidence for how well it works isn't yet clear. It does interact with blood thinners, diabetes medications, and possibly sedative drugs, so check with your doctor or pharmacist before you take it, especially if you're on any of those.
For pregnancy and breastfeeding, the safety data advise against it — talk it over with your healthcare provider first.

Holy Basil Leaf by Gaia Herbs Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Gaia Herbs' Holy Basil Leaf interacts with blood thinners and diabetes medications, and theoretically with a sedative barbiturate.
The most serious concern is a moderate-severity interaction with blood thinners (anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs) — holy basil seed oil may increase bleeding risk, though this effect has only been shown in animals so far.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
It also poses a moderate risk with diabetes drugs. Holy basil can lower fasting blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, which means it could push your blood sugar too low if you're already on medication for it.
Additionally, there's a theoretical moderate interaction with pentobarbital (Nembutal), a sedative barbiturate — animal research suggests holy basil seed oil might strengthen its drowsiness effect, but we don't know if that happens in humans.
We could not check eugenols, an ingredient in this product. Before you start, run your exact medications through the search tool on this page, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any blood thinner, diabetes medication, or sedative.

Holy Basil (Ocimum sanctum) leaf supercritical CO2 extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, holy basil seed oil might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Animal research shows that holy basil seed oil can prolong bleeding time, possibly due to inhibition of platelet aggregation. However, it is not known if this occurs in humans.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, holy basil might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Small clinical studies show that taking holy basil can decrease fasting blood glucose and other measures of glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Pentobarbital (Nembutal)
Theoretically, holy basil seed oil might increase the sedative effects of pentobarbital.
Animal research shows that holy basil seed oil increases pentobarbitone-induced sleeping time. However, it is not known if this occurs in humans or if this applies to other barbiturates or sedatives.
