HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Hoodia Extract by BulkSupplements.com
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: hoodia extract, derived from a succulent plant traditionally used as an appetite suppressant. The only other component is the powder base itself — no fillers or inactive ingredients are listed.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The effectiveness of hoodia extract for weight loss hasn't been established with reliable evidence in the data we hold. Studies on its use for obesity are graded insufficient to support or refute it as an effective treatment.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Hoodia has limited safety data, and some side effects and product quality concerns have been reported. Orally, it's been associated with minor adverse effects including headache, dizziness, giddiness, nausea, and disturbances in skin sensation.
There is also concern that it may increase blood pressure and heart rate. There isn't enough safety information to recommend hoodia during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood pressure medications (such as captopril, enalapril, losartan, or valsartan), beta-blockers (such as atenolol or metoprolol), diabetes medications, or insulin. Hoodia may reduce their effectiveness or cause your blood sugar to drop too low.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Hoodia extract is marketed for appetite suppression, but reliable evidence for weight loss isn't established in our data. If you take blood pressure medication, diabetes medication, or insulin, this product could interfere with how well they work and may raise your risk of low blood sugar or high blood pressure.
Talk with your own doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you, especially if you have heart or blood sugar concerns.

Hoodia Extract by BulkSupplements.com Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Hoodia Extract by BulkSupplements.com does interact with several important medication types.
The most serious concern is with blood pressure medications (antihypertensives) and beta-blockers — hoodia can raise blood pressure and heart rate, which may reduce how well these drugs work and increase your risk of elevated blood pressure. Examples include captopril, enalapril, losartan, valsartan, atenolol, and metoprolol.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Hoodia also affects diabetes and insulin medications. Research suggests a compound in hoodia may boost insulin secretion and lower blood glucose, which means combining it with diabetes drugs or insulin could increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
Blood glucose monitoring would be important if you're considering this product alongside these medications.
Altogether, these interactions span 262 individual medications. Because hoodia has limited safety data and product quality concerns have been reported, you'll want to check your specific medications with the search tool on this page and discuss this product with your own doctor or pharmacist before starting it.

For each ingredient in Hoodia Extract with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Hoodia extract
Antidiabetes Drugs
Animal research shows that a steroid glycoside of hoodia, gordonoside F, increases glucose-stimulated insulin secretion by activating GPR119. This effect enhances glucose disposal. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antidiabetes medications may enhance blood glucose-lowering effects and increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Some antidiabetes medications include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), glipizide (Glucotrol), tolbutamide (Orinase), and others.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antihypertensive drugs might decrease the effectiveness of the antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypertension. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.
Beta-Blockers
Evidence from in vitro research shows that hoodia may stimulate beta-adrenergic receptors. Also, clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure and heart rate. Theoretically, using hoodia with beta-blockers might decrease the effects of these medications. Some beta-blocker drugs include atenolol (Tenormin), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), nadolol (Corgard), and propranolol (Inderal).
Insulin
Animal research shows that a steroid glycoside of hoodia, gordonoside F, increases glucose-stimulated insulin secretion by activating GPR119. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with insulin may enhance the blood glucose-lowering effects of insulin. Blood glucose levels should be monitored.
