Why this applies to Hydrochlorothiazide, Pindolol

Hydrochlorothiazide, Pindolol falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Hoodia interacts with.

Clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antihypertensive drugs might decrease the effectiveness of the antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypertension. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), Amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Your Viskazide combines two blood pressure medicines: hydrochlorothiazide (a water pill) and pindolol (a beta-blocker). Both are meant to keep your blood pressure in a healthy range. The concern here is that hoodia has been shown in some research to actually raise blood pressure, which could work against what your medication is trying to do.

If your numbers creep up, you might notice headaches, dizziness, or simply lose some of the control you've worked to achieve. To be fair, this interaction is theoretical and based on how hoodia behaves rather than direct studies with this exact combo, so it isn't a sure thing. Still, since hoodia hasn't proven it helps with weight anyway, I'd run it by your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your readings.

Evidence from in vitro research shows that hoodia may stimulate beta-adrenergic receptors. Also, clinical research shows that hoodia can increase blood pressure and heart rate. Theoretically, using hoodia with beta-blockers might decrease the effects of these medications. Some beta-blocker drugs include atenolol (Tenormin), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), nadolol (Corgard), and propranolol (Inderal).

Your Viskazide combines two blood pressure helpers: pindolol (a beta-blocker) and hydrochlorothiazide (a water pill). The concern here is mostly with the pindolol half. Lab studies suggest hoodia may gently stimulate the same beta receptors that pindolol works to calm, and some research has linked hoodia to a slight bump in blood pressure and heart rate. So in theory, hoodia could push against what your medication is trying to do, possibly leaving your blood pressure or pulse a little higher than your doctor wants.

This is a theory based on lab and limited human data, not strong proof, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, since blood pressure control matters, it's worth checking with your pharmacist or doctor before adding hoodia. Please don't change your Viskazide on your own.
