Horse Chestnut Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herb Pharm
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Horse Chestnut against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This liquid contains one active ingredient: horse chestnut seed extract from Aesculus hippocastanum. The extract is prepared to remove esculin, a toxic compound naturally present in the raw plant, which makes it safer for oral use.
The base is certified organic cane alcohol and distilled water.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Horse chestnut has possibly effective evidence for chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) — the leg swelling and discomfort that comes from sluggish blood flow in the veins. For hemorrhoids, irritable bowel syndrome, and kidney stones, there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
When properly processed (with esculin removed), the extract is generally well tolerated, though some people report dizziness, stomach upset, headache, itching, or calf spasms. Raw plant parts are toxic and should be avoided.
Horse chestnut is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding — there isn't enough safety data, and the safety data we do have advises against it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check your medications against this product if you take any blood thinners (anticoagulants) or antiplatelet drugs like warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, dabigatran, apixaban, or rivaroxaban — horse chestnut may increase your bleeding risk. Use the interaction search tool on this page to look up your exact prescriptions.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Horse chestnut may help with leg swelling from chronic venous insufficiency, but it's not proven for other uses. The main concern is bleeding risk if you take blood thinners or aspirin-type drugs.
Before you start it, check with your doctor or pharmacist about your medications — especially anything that affects blood clotting. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
