Here's the situation with horse chestnut and abciximab (ReoPro). Abciximab is a powerful IV antiplatelet medicine given in the hospital during procedures like cardiac stenting, and it already works hard to keep your platelets from clumping. Horse chestnut contains a compound called esculin that might have a mild blood-thinning, antiplatelet effect of its own. Stacked together, the theory is that you could bleed more easily.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is theoretical, based on how horse chestnut behaves in the lab, not proven in people. Still, since abciximab is a strong agent given in a closely monitored setting, please tell your care team about any horse chestnut you take so they can watch for bruising or bleeding.
