HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Horse Chestnut Seed Extract by Solgar
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 2 active ingredients: a standardized horse chestnut seed extract (from which the toxic compound esculin has been removed) and raw horse chestnut powder. Both are meant to support circulation and leg health.
The capsule also holds several inactive ingredients — vegetable cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, vegetable magnesium stearate, and a PhytO2X Blend — which are fillers and binders that help hold the capsule together.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Horse chestnut seed extract is possibly effective for chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) — the pooling of blood in leg veins that causes swelling and discomfort. The evidence we hold isn't strong enough yet to rate it for hemorrhoids, irritable bowel syndrome, or kidney stones, even though some people use it for those purposes.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
The properly processed extract in this product is generally well tolerated. The most common side effects from the extract are dizziness, upset stomach, headache, and itching.
However, this product also contains raw horse chestnut powder, which is toxic and carries a risk of severe gastrointestinal irritation and kidney damage — that's a significant safety difference from the extract alone. Do not use this product during pregnancy or while breastfeeding; there isn't enough safety data, and the safety data we hold advises against it.
One case report described a serious heart condition in someone who consumed large amounts of horse chestnut paste over weeks, possibly tied to the plant's antiplatelet activity.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take any blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs — aspirin, warfarin, clopidogrel, and others in that category. Horse chestnut may increase your bleeding risk with these medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may help with leg swelling from chronic venous insufficiency, but the mix of a processed extract and raw powder raises safety concerns — especially the raw part's toxicity risk. If you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs, you need to check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Pregnant and breastfeeding people should avoid it entirely.

Horse Chestnut Seed Extract by Solgar Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Solgar's Horse Chestnut Seed Extract contains two forms of horse chestnut — a standardized extract and raw powder — both of which interact with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin, aspirin, and clopidogrel).
Horse chestnut has antiplatelet effects that may increase your bleeding risk if you're already on these medications. This interaction is Moderate in severity.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Because the product contains raw horse chestnut powder alongside the processed extract, there's an added safety concern: raw plant parts are toxic and carry a higher risk of gastrointestinal irritation and kidney damage compared to the properly processed extract alone.
Before you start this supplement, check with your doctor or pharmacist about all your medications — especially if you take any blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs. Altogether, these interactions span 122 individual medications.
