Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Huai Hua Mi contains one active ingredient: sophora japonica bud and flower extract (also called pagoda tree). The product also includes alcohol, water, and glycerin as inactive ingredients to deliver and preserve the extract.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Pagoda Tree product and its label doesn't state a use — see Pagoda Tree's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence isn't established in the data we hold. For the two uses listed — hemorrhoids and menopausal symptoms — the research is insufficient to say whether sophora japonica works or doesn't work.

You'd need to talk with your healthcare provider about whether this herbal extract is right for your situation.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

The flower and bud of pagoda tree are generally well tolerated in traditional use, though human safety studies are limited. However, the seed of pagoda tree is possibly unsafe long-term — it's been associated with rare serious effects including swelling (edema) and death.

This product uses the bud and flower, not the seed, but caution is warranted because overall safety data are sparse. Do not use during pregnancy — the safety data advise against it.

Avoid use while breastfeeding as well, since safety is unknown.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Huai Hua Mi may be worth considering if you're exploring traditional herbal support for hemorrhoids or menopausal symptoms, but the evidence for either use isn't established yet. Because it can slow caffeine clearance, check your caffeine intake and watch for excess jitters.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding are off-limits. Talk with your pharmacist before starting, especially if you drink coffee or take other medications.

Caffeine

Theoretically, pagoda tree might reduce the clearance of caffeine.
Pagoda tree contains genistein. Taking genistein 1 gram daily for 14 days seems to inhibit caffeine clearance and metabolism in healthy females. This effect has been attributed to inhibition of the cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme, which is involved in caffeine metabolism. It is unclear if this effect occurs with the lower amounts of genistein found in pagoda tree.

Huai Hua Mi by Herbal Terra: Common Questions

Does Huai Hua Mi by Herbal Terra interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Huai Hua Mi has a known interaction with 29 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Huai Hua Mi contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. The safety data advise against use during pregnancy, and safety while breastfeeding is unknown, so it's best to avoid it. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about alternatives if you're pregnant or nursing.
What is sophora japonica, and what's it supposed to do?
Sophora japonica, also called pagoda tree, is used in traditional herbal medicine. In this product, the bud and flower extract are marketed for hemorrhoids and menopausal symptoms, but we don't have reliable evidence yet that it works for either.
Does this product have side effects?
The flower and bud are generally well tolerated with no reported adverse effects in traditional use. However, because human safety studies are limited, side effects could exist that we haven't found yet. If you notice anything unusual, stop and call your pharmacist.
I drink a lot of coffee — is this safe to combine?
Not without caution. This extract may slow how your body clears caffeine, which could build up and cause jitters, anxiety, or sleep trouble. If you take it, watch your caffeine intake closely and start with less coffee than you normally drink.
Are there any inactive ingredients I should know about?
The product contains alcohol, water, and glycerin as inactive ingredients. If you avoid alcohol, you'll want to skip this — alcohol is a major component of the liquid.
