Pagoda Tree and Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CAFFEINE

Theoretically, pagoda tree might reduce the clearance of caffeine.
Pagoda tree contains genistein. Taking genistein 1 gram daily for 14 days seems to inhibit caffeine clearance and metabolism in healthy females. This effect has been attributed to inhibition of the cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme, which is involved in caffeine metabolism. It is unclear if this effect occurs with the lower amounts of genistein found in pagoda tree.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with Pagoda Tree and your caffeine and sodium benzoate. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP1A2 to break caffeine down and clear it out. Pagoda Tree contains a flavonoid called genistein, and in lab and small human studies, high concentrated doses of genistein appeared to slow that enzyme. If that happens, caffeine can linger longer in your system, which could mean more of caffeine's usual effects like jitteriness, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired.

That said, this is mostly theoretical. We don't know if the smaller amounts of genistein in Pagoda Tree supplements are enough to matter. It's a good idea to mention this combo to your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Caffeine , Sodium Benzoate page

“Caffeine and sodium benzoate is itself a stimulant medication, so the supplements most likely to cause trouble are the ones doing the same job. Seven of the 208 ingredients on file rate major, several of them stimulant herbs such as ephedra that can pile extra blood pressure and heart strain onto a drug already revving the nervous system.”
