Pagoda Tree and Acetaminophen, Caffeine, Chlorpheniramine, Hydrocodone, Phenylephrine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CAFFEINE

Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Caffeine, Chlorpheniramine, Hydrocodone, Phenylephrine

Acetaminophen, Caffeine, Chlorpheniramine, Hydrocodone, Phenylephrine falls under CAFFEINE — the group Pagoda Tree interacts with.

Theoretically, pagoda tree might reduce the clearance of caffeine.
Pagoda tree contains genistein. Taking genistein 1 gram daily for 14 days seems to inhibit caffeine clearance and metabolism in healthy females. This effect has been attributed to inhibition of the cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme, which is involved in caffeine metabolism. It is unclear if this effect occurs with the lower amounts of genistein found in pagoda tree.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

The piece of this combination product that matters here is the caffeine. Pagoda Tree contains a flavonoid called genistein, which may block a liver enzyme (CYP1A2) that normally clears caffeine out of your body. If caffeine sticks around longer, you could feel more of its usual effects, like jitteriness, a racing or pounding heart, trouble sleeping, or feeling wired and anxious.

I want to be honest about how soft this is, though. This is only a theoretical concern based on how the chemistry might work, and it came from studies using high-dose genistein, not the smaller amounts found in Pagoda Tree. We don't know if a supplement dose does anything noticeable. If you take this medicine often or are sensitive to caffeine, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

  • Source of the flavonoid rutin
  • General antioxidant support
  • Skin and circulation health (topical/cosmetic use)

Pagoda Tree (Styphnolobium japonicum, also called the Japanese pagoda tree) is a traditional Asian medicinal plant best known as a natural source of the flavonoid rutin.
