Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

Huai Hua Mi contains one active ingredient: pagoda tree (Sophora japonica) extract made from dried buds and flowers. In traditional medicine, it's been used to address hemorrhoids and menopausal symptoms, though the evidence for either use is still limited.

The product also contains menstruum, an inactive ingredient used as a solvent or carrier in liquid extracts.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Pagoda Tree product and its label doesn't state a use — see Pagoda Tree's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

We don't have reliable evidence that pagoda tree works for hemorrhoids or menopausal symptoms. Both uses are rated as having insufficient evidence.

That doesn't mean it doesn't work — just that the data we hold hasn't established it yet.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data

Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Pagoda tree flower and bud appear to be well tolerated with no reported adverse effects in typical use. However, human safety data are limited, so caution is warranted.

The pagoda tree seed is a different story — long-term use of the seed is possibly unsafe and may cause edema (fluid buildup) and has been linked to rare serious outcomes. This product is made from bud and flower, not seed, but the limited safety data mean you should use it carefully.

During pregnancy, the safety data advise against use. While breastfeeding, safety is unknown; talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you.

Check any caffeine-containing medications or supplements before you start — including over-the-counter pain relievers, cold products, energy drinks, and diet aids that contain caffeine. Pagoda tree may slow how your body clears caffeine, raising the risk of side effects like jitteriness or sleep trouble.

Caffeine

Theoretically, pagoda tree might reduce the clearance of caffeine.
Pagoda tree contains genistein. Taking genistein 1 gram daily for 14 days seems to inhibit caffeine clearance and metabolism in healthy females. This effect has been attributed to inhibition of the cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme, which is involved in caffeine metabolism. It is unclear if this effect occurs with the lower amounts of genistein found in pagoda tree.
