Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: Huai Hua Mi, which is a liquid extract made from the dried buds and flowers of the pagoda tree (Sophora japonica). It's been used in traditional medicine, though the evidence base for what it does is still being built.

The extract is suspended in menstruum, an inactive ingredient used to deliver the herbal material.

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Pagoda Tree product and its label doesn't state a use — see Pagoda Tree's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The data we hold shows insufficient evidence to rate pagoda tree for hemorrhoids or menopausal symptoms. That doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means the reliable studies aren't there yet to say either way.

If you're considering it for one of these concerns, talk it over with your doctor or pharmacist about whether the traditional use or any other evidence might apply to your situation.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Pagoda tree flower and bud — the parts in this product — are generally well tolerated, and no adverse effects have been reported in the available data. However, human safety information is limited, so use it cautiously.

The pagoda tree seed, which is not in this product, may cause serious problems with long-term use, so that's not a concern here. For pregnancy and breastfeeding, the safety data advises against use.

There isn't enough information to know whether it's safe while you're breastfeeding, so avoid it in that situation as well. If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Pagoda Tree.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 29 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Check your medications before starting, especially anything that contains caffeine — this extract may make caffeine effects stronger or longer-lasting. The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Huai Hua Mi is a single-ingredient traditional herbal extract with limited human safety data and unproven effectiveness for the conditions it's traditionally used for. It does interact with caffeine metabolism, so if you're sensitive to caffeine or take medications that depend on the same enzyme, check with your own doctor or pharmacist first.

Pregnant people and those breastfeeding should avoid it.

Caffeine

Theoretically, pagoda tree might reduce the clearance of caffeine.
Pagoda tree contains genistein. Taking genistein 1 gram daily for 14 days seems to inhibit caffeine clearance and metabolism in healthy females. This effect has been attributed to inhibition of the cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme, which is involved in caffeine metabolism. It is unclear if this effect occurs with the lower amounts of genistein found in pagoda tree.

Huai Hua Mi by Herbal Terra: Common Questions

Does Huai Hua Mi by Herbal Terra interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Huai Hua Mi has a known interaction with 29 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Huai Hua Mi contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Is pagoda tree the same as the seed that can cause serious side effects?
No. This product uses the dried buds and flowers of the pagoda tree. The seed is what carries the serious safety concerns with long-term use — edema and in rare cases, death — so that's not relevant to this extract.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
The safety data advises against it in pregnancy. While breastfeeding, there isn't enough information to know either way — but the cautious recommendation is to avoid it. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about your specific situation.
Does this product actually work for hemorrhoids or hot flashes?
The evidence we hold is insufficient to rate it for either condition. It's used in traditional medicine for these concerns, but reliable human studies haven't established whether it's effective. Your doctor or pharmacist can discuss whether the traditional use might be worth trying for you.
Will this affect my coffee or tea?
Possibly. This extract may slow how your body clears caffeine, so your coffee or tea could have a stronger or longer-lasting effect. If you're caffeine-sensitive, you might want to reduce your intake or talk with your pharmacist.
