What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: ipriflavone, 600 mg per capsule. Ipriflavone is a synthetic compound derived from soy that's studied for its effects on bone metabolism.
The capsule itself is made of gelatin.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Ipriflavone is rated likely effective for osteoporosis and also for Paget disease (a bone disorder that causes abnormal bone remodeling). That said, the evidence we hold doesn't detail how well it works compared to other treatments or the typical size of benefit in real patients — talk with your doctor about whether it fits your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Ipriflavone is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, but some people experience stomach pain, diarrhea, or dizziness. There's concern that long-term use (6 months or more) may lower white blood cell counts.
The product should be avoided during pregnancy due to possible estrogen-like effects, and it's best avoided during breastfeeding due to insufficient safety data. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take theophylline (a breathing medication), drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 or CYP2C9 enzymes (including some antidepressants, muscle relaxants, and anti-anxiety medicines), or any immunosuppressant medications. Ipriflavone can raise levels of theophylline and many other drugs, raising the risk of side effects or toxicity.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Ipriflavone may help with osteoporosis and Paget disease, but it has significant interactions with common medications and can affect white blood cell counts with long-term use. If you take any prescription drugs — especially theophylline, muscle relaxants, antidepressants, anti-anxiety medicines, or immunosuppressants — clear it with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
It's not for pregnant or breastfeeding individuals.

Ipriflavone 600 mg by Specialty Pharmacy Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Ipriflavone 600 mg by Specialty Pharmacy interacts with medications through its effects on how your liver breaks down certain drugs.
The most serious concern is with theophylline (a breathing medication), where ipriflavone can raise theophylline levels in your blood to potentially unsafe levels — two patients experienced this after starting ipriflavone.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Ipriflavone also inhibits two major liver enzymes (CYP1A2 and CYP2C9) that clear many common medications. If you take drugs metabolized by these pathways — including some antidepressants, muscle relaxants, anti-anxiety medicines, and others — ipriflavone may slow their elimination and raise their blood levels, risking toxicity.
Altogether, these interactions span 391 individual medications.
Additionally, ipriflavone can suppress immune function and may lower white blood cell counts. If you're on immunosuppressant drugs (such as cyclosporine, azathioprine, or others used after transplant or for autoimmune disease), combining them with ipriflavone could add to that suppressive effect and is best avoided.
Before starting this product, check your exact medications with the search tool on this page or discuss them with your doctor or pharmacist.

Ipriflavone
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Ipriflavone is thought to competitively inhibit cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2). Theoretically, concurrent use of ipriflavone and drugs metabolized by these enzymes might result in decreased drug elimination, increased serum levels, and potential toxicity. Some drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 include clozapine (Clozaril), cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), fluvoxamine (Luvox), haloperidol (Haldol), imipramine (Tofranil), mexiletine (Mexitil), olanzapine (Zyprexa), Pentazocine (Talwin), propranolol (Inderal), tacrine (Cognex), theophylline (Slo-bid, Theo-Dur, others), zileuton (Zyflo), Zolmitriptan (Zomig), and others.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Ipriflavone is thought to competitively inhibit cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9). Theoretically, concurrent use of ipriflavone and drugs metabolized by these enzymes might result in decreased drug elimination, increased serum levels, and potential toxicity. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 include amitriptyline (Elavil), diazepam (Valium), estradiol (Estrace), tacrine (Cognex), verapamil (Calan), warfarin (Coumadin), zileuton (Zyflo), and others.
Immunosuppressants
Concurrent use of ipriflavone and immunosuppressant drugs might have additive effects on inhibiting immune function. Some patients taking ipriflavone experience subclinical lymphocytopenia; avoid concurrent use. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), and other corticosteroids (glucocorticoids).
Theophylline
Concomitant use of theophylline and ipriflavone can increase serum theophylline levels. Increased theophylline levels have occurred in two cases after patients started taking ipriflavone. Ipriflavone is thought to decrease theophylline metabolism through competitive inhibition of the cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme.
