Ipriflavone Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Ipriflavone against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: ipriflavone, a compound structurally similar to isoflavones found in plants. The capsule itself is made of gelatin, microcrystalline cellulose (a binder), and vegetable stearate (a lubricant).
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Ipriflavone is likely effective for osteoporosis and Paget disease (a bone disorder). The evidence supporting its use for these conditions is established in our data, though as with any supplement, individual results can vary.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Ipriflavone is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth, though some people report stomach pain (epigastric discomfort), diarrhea, and dizziness. There's concern that long-term use — at least 6 months — can lower white blood cell counts, which is why the data cautions against it and recommends limited use.
Pregnancy safety data isn't reliable, so it should be avoided during pregnancy. Breastfeeding safety information is also insufficient, and the product is best avoided while nursing.
Because of these gaps and the potential for estrogen-like effects, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, double-check your medications with your doctor or pharmacist if you take immunosuppressants (used after transplants), drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 or CYP2C9 enzymes (including muscle relaxants, some antidepressants, and anti-anxiety medications), or theophylline for breathing problems. All of these interact at a Moderate level.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Ipriflavone is likely effective for osteoporosis and Paget disease, but it's not for everyone. If you take any medications — especially immunosuppressants, muscle relaxants, certain antidepressants, or theophylline — you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist first.
Pregnant and nursing individuals should avoid it, and long-term use carries some caution around blood cell counts.

Ipriflavone by Douglas Laboratories Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Ipriflavone by Douglas Laboratories interacts with medications through its effects on how your body breaks down certain drugs — mainly by slowing down two key liver enzymes (CYP1A2 and CYP2C9) — and by potentially dampening immune function.
The most serious concern is with immunosuppressant drugs (used after transplants or for severe autoimmune conditions): ipriflavone may intensify their effect on your immune system, and some people taking ipriflavone develop low white blood cell counts, so combining them requires caution.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Moderatе interactions also apply to drugs metabolized through CYP1A2, including muscle relaxants like cyclobenzaprine and some antipsychotics, as well as drugs metabolized through CYP2C9, like certain antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications — slowed breakdown can raise drug levels and cause toxicity. Theophylline (a breathing medication) is another Moderate concern: ipriflavone can raise its levels in your blood, and increased theophylline toxicity has been documented.
Altogether, these interactions span 391 individual medications. Before you start ipriflavone, use the search tool below to check your exact prescriptions, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's safe to combine with what you're taking.

Ipriflavone
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Ipriflavone is thought to competitively inhibit cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2). Theoretically, concurrent use of ipriflavone and drugs metabolized by these enzymes might result in decreased drug elimination, increased serum levels, and potential toxicity. Some drugs metabolized by CYP1A2 include clozapine (Clozaril), cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril), fluvoxamine (Luvox), haloperidol (Haldol), imipramine (Tofranil), mexiletine (Mexitil), olanzapine (Zyprexa), Pentazocine (Talwin), propranolol (Inderal), tacrine (Cognex), theophylline (Slo-bid, Theo-Dur, others), zileuton (Zyflo), Zolmitriptan (Zomig), and others.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Ipriflavone is thought to competitively inhibit cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9). Theoretically, concurrent use of ipriflavone and drugs metabolized by these enzymes might result in decreased drug elimination, increased serum levels, and potential toxicity. Some drugs metabolized by CYP2C9 include amitriptyline (Elavil), diazepam (Valium), estradiol (Estrace), tacrine (Cognex), verapamil (Calan), warfarin (Coumadin), zileuton (Zyflo), and others.
Immunosuppressants
Concurrent use of ipriflavone and immunosuppressant drugs might have additive effects on inhibiting immune function. Some patients taking ipriflavone experience subclinical lymphocytopenia; avoid concurrent use. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), and other corticosteroids (glucocorticoids).
Theophylline
Concomitant use of theophylline and ipriflavone can increase serum theophylline levels. Increased theophylline levels have occurred in two cases after patients started taking ipriflavone. Ipriflavone is thought to decrease theophylline metabolism through competitive inhibition of the cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) enzyme.
