HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Kelife Iodine by Douglas Laboratories
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 2 active ingredients: iodine and Ascophyllum nodosum, a type of seaweed that naturally holds iodine. The tablet also includes several inactive ingredients — dicalcium phosphate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, vegetable stearate, stearic acid, and silica — that serve as binders and fillers to hold the tablet together.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Iodine is likely effective for preventing thyroid problems after radiation exposure and for correcting iodine deficiency. It's possibly effective for mouth sores and gum disease.
Ascophyllum nodosum, on the other hand, doesn't have established evidence in our data for any of the uses it's claimed to help with — including blood sugar control, weight, acid reflux, and iodine deficiency. The seaweed's iodine content is less readily absorbed than straight iodine, so it's a weaker source.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Iodine is well tolerated in normal dietary amounts, but high doses can cause thyroid problems including swelling, overactive thyroid, or underactive thyroid, along with headache, nausea, diarrhea, and a metallic taste. Rare serious reactions include severe allergic responses.
Taking too much iodine over time can also cause acne-like skin lesions. During pregnancy, adequate iodine is important, but use only the amount your doctor advises and avoid high-dose products; the same caution applies to breastfeeding, since excess iodine passes into breast milk.
Ascophyllum nodosum is generally used in food, but its iodine content and the possibility of heavy metal contamination make it risky in concentrated supplement form — safety data advises against it in pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Kelife Iodine by Douglas Laboratories Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Kelife Iodine by Douglas Laboratories interacts with medications through its iodine and Ascophyllum nodosum content.
The most serious concern is a Moderate interaction with lithium — combining iodine with lithium might lower thyroid function even further, since lithium already suppresses the thyroid. Both ingredients also interact with antithyroid drugs, amiodarone, and thyroid hormone medications at Moderate severity, potentially altering how these drugs work or causing excessive iodine buildup in your system.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
If you take antithyroid drugs or thyroid hormone replacement, iodine can interfere with how well they work or cause your thyroid to swing between too-low and too-high function. Amiodarone (a heart rhythm medication) already contains high amounts of iodine, so adding this supplement could push your iodine levels too high and damage your thyroid.
Altogether, these interactions span 23 individual medications.
Check your exact prescriptions with the tool on this page before you start, especially if you're on any thyroid or heart medications.

For each ingredient in Kelife Iodine with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Ascophyllum nodosum
Amiodarone (Cordarone)
Theoretically, combining Ascophyllum nodosum with amiodarone might cause excessively high iodine levels.
Ascophyllum nodosum contains iodine, although the bioavailability of iodine from Ascophyllum nodosum is lower than that of potassium iodide. Amiodarone contains 37.3% iodine and can increase iodine levels. Concomitant use might increase the risk of having excessive iodine levels and adversely affecting thyroid function. Monitor thyroid function.
Antithyroid Drugs
Due to its iodine content, Ascophyllum nodosum might alter the effects of antithyroid drugs.
Ascophyllum nodosum contains iodine, although the bioavailability of iodine from Ascophyllum nodosum is lower than that of potassium iodide. Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Taking Ascophyllum nodosum while using antithyroid drugs could alter the effects of the antithyroid drugs.
Thyroid Hormone
Due to its iodine content, Ascophyllum nodosum might alter the effects of thyroid hormone.
Ascophyllum nodosum contains iodine, although the bioavailability of iodine from Ascophyllum nodosum is lower than that of potassium iodide. Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Taking Ascophyllum nodosum while using thyroid hormone could alter the effects of thyroid hormone.

Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Taking iodine while using antithyroid drugs could alter the effects of the antithyroid drugs.
Lithium
Combining iodine with lithium might have additive hypothyroid effects.
Lithium can inhibit thyroid function. Several case reports suggest that concomitant use of lithium and potassium iodide can reduce thyroid function in otherwise healthy adults. Monitor thyroid function.
