Kelp Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Kelp against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This capsule contains one active ingredient: iodine, a mineral your body needs to make thyroid hormones and support your metabolism. The remaining ingredients are fillers and the capsule material itself—modified cellulose, vegetable gelatin, magnesium stearate, and silica.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Iodine is likely effective for preventing thyroid problems caused by iodine deficiency and for protecting the thyroid after radiation exposure. It's possibly effective for reducing a type of mouth sore called oral mucositis and for treating gum disease (periodontitis), though the evidence for those uses is less established.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Iodine is well tolerated in normal dietary amounts, but high doses can cause thyroid problems like enlarged thyroid gland (goiter) or either too much or too little thyroid hormone production. The most common side effects at higher doses are abdominal upset, diarrhea, nausea, headache, and a metallic taste.
Rarely, some people have hypersensitivity reactions including severe swelling, hives, or fever. Taking it chronically in very large amounts has been linked to acneform skin lesions.
In pregnancy, some iodine is necessary, but only use the amount your doctor recommends and avoid high-dose products. During breastfeeding, excess iodine can pass into breast milk, so follow your doctor's guidance on dosing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take lithium, antithyroid drugs, or amiodarone (Cordarone). All three have moderate interactions with iodine that can affect your thyroid function—your healthcare provider may need to monitor your thyroid and adjust doses.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This supplement is for people who need more iodine—whether due to deficiency, radiation exposure, or a doctor's recommendation. If you take lithium, heart medications like amiodarone, or antithyroid drugs, you'll need to check with your own doctor or pharmacist before starting it.
Anyone with thyroid disease or a history of thyroid problems should also clear it with their healthcare provider first.

Kelp by Endo-met Laboratories Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Endo-met Laboratories' Kelp is a single-ingredient supplement containing iodine, which does interact with several medications.
The most serious concern is a moderate interaction with lithium (used for mood disorders), where iodine may add to lithium's thyroid-suppressing effects and reduce how well your thyroid works.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Iodine also has moderate interactions with antithyroid drugs (medications that lower thyroid hormone) and with amiodarone (a heart rhythm medication). Antithyroid drugs work by blocking thyroid function, and iodine can interfere with that balance depending on your health history.
Amiodarone itself is about one-third iodine by weight, so taking an iodine supplement alongside it can push iodine levels dangerously high and harm thyroid function.
Altogether, these interactions span 7 individual medications. If you take lithium, any antithyroid drug, or amiodarone, run them through the search tool on this page or check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting this supplement.

Kelp (Ascophyllum nodosum) extract
Amiodarone (Cordarone)
Theoretically, combining Ascophyllum nodosum with amiodarone might cause excessively high iodine levels.
Ascophyllum nodosum contains iodine, although the bioavailability of iodine from Ascophyllum nodosum is lower than that of potassium iodide. Amiodarone contains 37.3% iodine and can increase iodine levels. Concomitant use might increase the risk of having excessive iodine levels and adversely affecting thyroid function. Monitor thyroid function.
Antithyroid Drugs
Due to its iodine content, Ascophyllum nodosum might alter the effects of antithyroid drugs.
Ascophyllum nodosum contains iodine, although the bioavailability of iodine from Ascophyllum nodosum is lower than that of potassium iodide. Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Taking Ascophyllum nodosum while using antithyroid drugs could alter the effects of the antithyroid drugs.
Thyroid Hormone
Due to its iodine content, Ascophyllum nodosum might alter the effects of thyroid hormone.
Ascophyllum nodosum contains iodine, although the bioavailability of iodine from Ascophyllum nodosum is lower than that of potassium iodide. Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history.
