Krill Healthy Joint Formula Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Krill Healthy Joint Formula against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This formula has 3 active ingredients. Hyaluronic acid is a natural compound that helps retain moisture in tissues.
Natural astaxanthin is a carotenoid—a pigment with antioxidant properties. Antarctic krill oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and phospholipids from tiny crustaceans.
The product also contains inactive ingredients: gelatin, olive oil, sorbitol, glycerin, purified water, beeswax, and vanillin as a flavoring.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence on this formula's ingredients is mixed. Hyaluronic acid is possibly effective for dry eye and venous leg ulcers, but evidence is insufficient to rate it for aging skin, hay fever, or sexual dysfunction.
Krill oil is possibly effective for dry eye as well, but evidence is insufficient for aging skin, Alzheimer's disease, cancer, cholesterol levels, or cognitive function. Astaxanthin's effectiveness hasn't been reliably established for any condition—evidence is insufficient to rate it for age-related cognitive decline, macular degeneration, aging skin, Alzheimer's disease, athletic performance, or carpal tunnel syndrome.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
All three ingredients are generally well tolerated orally. Hyaluronic acid and krill oil appear safe for most adults when taken by mouth, though long-term safety data are limited.
The most common side effects with krill oil are gastrointestinal: bloating, decreased appetite, diarrhea, fishy burps, flatulence, heartburn, nausea, and stomach discomfort—though these tend to be milder with krill oil than with fish oil. Astaxanthin may cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, or red-colored stool; at very high doses, stomach pain has been reported.
Avoid this product if you have a shellfish allergy, and use caution if you have a bleeding disorder. For pregnancy and breastfeeding, the data on astaxanthin and krill oil advises against use unless your doctor clears it; safety information for hyaluronic acid isn't on file.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin or aspirin)—krill oil may increase bleeding risk. Also flag diabetes medications (since krill oil may theoretically lower blood sugar further) and any drugs metabolized through CYP3A4 or CYP2B6 liver pathways (since astaxanthin may theoretically slow their clearance, though this hasn't been seen in humans yet).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This is a three-ingredient joint formula best suited for people without blood clotting disorders or allergies to shellfish. If you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, or drugs metabolized by certain liver enzymes, you'll need to check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Expect possible gastrointestinal side effects, especially from the krill oil. The evidence on whether it actually works for joint health isn't established in the data we hold.

Krill Healthy Joint Formula by Life Extension Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Life Extension's Krill Healthy Joint Formula contains three active ingredients, and two of them—astaxanthin and krill oil—have documented interactions with medications.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like warfarin or aspirin): krill oil may theoretically increase bleeding risk if you're taking these, a Moderate-severity interaction. Astaxanthin may also slow how your liver processes certain medications.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Astaxanthin can theoretically decrease levels of drugs broken down by CYP3A4 and CYP2B6 enzymes—two major metabolic pathways in your liver. This is a Moderate concern in theory, though it hasn't been reported in humans yet.
Krill oil carries an additional Moderate risk with diabetes medications: in theory it might lower blood sugar further, though study results are mixed.
Hyaluronic acid, the third ingredient, has no interactions documented in our data. Altogether, these interactions span 839 individual medications.
Before you start this product, run your exact medications through the interaction checker on this page, and talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood thinners, diabetes drugs, or anything metabolized through those liver pathways.

For each ingredient in Krill Healthy Joint Formula with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
natural Astaxanthin
Cytochrome P450 2B6 (Cyp2B6) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces cytochrome CYP2B6 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, astaxanthin may decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that astaxanthin induces CYP3A4 enzyme activity in human hepatocytes. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Antarctic Krill (Euphausia superba) Oil
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, krill oil may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Taking high doses of omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil can modestly decrease platelet aggregation. Since krill oil also contains these fatty acids, taking high doses of krill oil might also inhibit platelet aggregation. Theoretically, taking high doses of krill oil with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs might increase the risk of bleeding. However, the omega-3 content of krill oil is much lower than that of fish oil.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking krill oil with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Some research in animals and humans shows that krill oil might lower blood glucose levels. However, a small study shows that taking krill oil does not reduce blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes, most of whom were taking antidiabetes drugs.
