HelloPharmacist Scorecard of L-Phenylalanine 500 Milligrams by NutraBio
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-phenylalanine at 500 milligrams per capsule. L-phenylalanine is an amino acid — one of the building blocks your body uses to make proteins and certain brain chemicals.
The capsule itself is made from vegetable material.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The data shows L-phenylalanine is possibly effective for vitiligo (a skin condition marked by loss of pigment). For ADHD, the evidence suggests it's possibly ineffective.
For alcohol use disorder and multiple sclerosis, we don't have enough reliable evidence to rate whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Phenylalanine is generally well tolerated at typical doses, though the most common side effects when taken by mouth are anxiety, constipation, headache, heartburn, insomnia, nausea, and sedation. Some people have reported insomnia and anxiety more often, and in rare cases, hypomania.
Do not use this supplement if you have phenylketonuria (PKU) — a genetic condition that makes it unsafe to consume phenylalanine. For pregnancy: the safety data advises against supplement doses because safety hasn't been established — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether it's right for you.
For breastfeeding, avoid supplement doses due to lack of safety data; again, check with your own healthcare provider before taking it.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on levodopa (used for Parkinson disease) — this supplement can reduce its effectiveness and worsen symptoms. Also flag baclofen (a muscle relaxant) and non-selective MAOIs (older antidepressants like pargyline) — both have moderate interactions that could lower their effectiveness or raise blood-pressure risk.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Phenylalanine may be worth considering if you're exploring support for vitiligo and under the care of your healthcare provider. If you take levodopa, baclofen, or an MAOI antidepressant, you'll need to clear this supplement with your doctor or pharmacist first — the interactions can affect how well those drugs work.
Anyone with PKU should avoid it entirely.

L-Phenylalanine 500 Milligrams by NutraBio Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
NutraBio's L-Phenylalanine can interact with medications, most seriously through its effect on levodopa (used in Parkinson disease).
Phenylalanine competes with levodopa for entry into the brain, which can reduce levodopa's effectiveness and worsen tremor, stiffness, and on-off symptom swings.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
It also has moderate interactions with baclofen (a muscle relaxant) — phenylalanine can lower how much baclofen your intestines absorb, reducing the drug's levels in your blood. Non-selective MAOIs (older antidepressants) pose a theoretical moderate risk as well: phenylalanine metabolizes to tyrosine, which might prevent the MAOI from clearing tyramine normally and raise the risk of a sudden dangerous blood-pressure spike.
Altogether, these interactions span 16 individual medications. Before starting this supplement, especially if you're on any of these drugs, check your exact medication list using the tool on this page and run it past your own doctor or pharmacist.

L-Phenylalanine
Levodopa
Phenylalanine, especially in high doses, can reduce the effectiveness of levodopa.
Phenylalanine competes with levodopa for carrier-mediated transport into the brain. The resulting reduction in levels of levodopa in the brain can exacerbate tremor, rigidity, and the "on-off" phenomenon in patients with Parkinson disease.
Baclofen
Concomitant intake of phenylalanine may reduce the intestinal absorption of baclofen.
Phenylalanine and baclofen share the same intestinal carrier for absorption; phenylalanine competitively inhibits the absorption of baclofen, reducing its plasma levels.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (Maois)
Theoretically, concomitant use of L-phenylalanine and non-selective MAOIs might increase the risk of hypertensive crisis.
L-phenylalanine is metabolized to tyrosine. Some evidence suggests that L-phenylalanine, given with the non-selective MAOI pargyline, might prevent the elimination of tyramine, increasing the risk of hypertensive crisis. However, this was not reported in a small number of patients when using L-phenylalanine with the partially selective MAO-B inhibitor, selegiline.
