Why this applies to Amphetamine

Amphetamine falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs) — the group Phenylalanine interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of L-phenylalanine and non-selective MAOIs might increase the risk of hypertensive crisis.
L-phenylalanine is metabolized to tyrosine. Some evidence suggests that L-phenylalanine, given with the non-selective MAOI pargyline, might prevent the elimination of tyramine, increasing the risk of hypertensive crisis. However, this was not reported in a small number of patients when using L-phenylalanine with the partially selective MAO-B inhibitor, selegiline.

Here's the thing to understand: amphetamine itself works by pushing your body to release more dopamine and norepinephrine, the same kinds of stimulating brain chemicals that phenylalanine helps build. So stacking the two together leans in the same direction, which could nudge up blood pressure, heart rate, jitteriness, or trouble sleeping. This isn't a prodrug situation, the concern is simply additive stimulation.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though. The interaction on file is mostly theoretical and comes from lab work and older studies pairing phenylalanine with strong MAOI medications, not directly with amphetamine. The real-world risk for most people is uncertain. Still, because both can raise blood pressure, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining a phenylalanine supplement with your amphetamine.

What Is Amphetamine Used For?

Brand names: Dyanavel XR, Adensys XR-ODT, Mydayis, Adzenys ER

Amphetamine treats Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in patients 6 years and older. Adzenys XR-ODT, Dyanavel XR, and the amphetamine extended-release orally disintegrating tablet formulations are specifically approved for ADHD in this age group.

Amphetamine Sulfate tablets and Evekeo (amphetamine sulfate tablets) are also approved for narcolepsy (a sleep disorder causing uncontrollable daytime sleepiness) and as a short-term aid in a calorie-restricted weight-loss program for exogenous obesity (weight gain from external factors like overeating) in patients who have not responded to other approaches.
