Yohimbe + Amphetamine
Amphetamine brand names: Dyanavel XR, Adensys XR-ODT, Mydayis, Adzenys ER.
Amphetamine falls into 3 drug categories that Yohimbe can interact with; the most serious is rated major. Concomitant use of MAOIs with yohimbe can result in additive effects.
Read the full interaction reportYohimbe and Amphetamine
These two interact in 3 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 3 Interactions?
Yohimbe interacts with whole categories of medication. Amphetamine falls into 3 of those categories, so it can interact with Yohimbe in 3 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Major).
MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs)
1 of 3Why this applies to Amphetamine
Amphetamine falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs) — the group Yohimbe interacts with.
Yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe, has MAO inhibitory effects. At high doses, yohimbine is a non-selective inhibitor of MAO.
Well-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
Here's the concern with pairing yohimbe and your amphetamine medication. Amphetamine works by flooding your system with stimulating brain chemicals like norepinephrine and dopamine. At higher doses, the yohimbine in yohimbe can act like a mild MAO inhibitor, which slows the breakdown of those very same chemicals. Stacked together, you could get an exaggerated stimulant response.
In real terms, that might mean a spiking blood pressure, racing or pounding heartbeat, anxiety, jitteriness, or trouble sleeping. I'll be honest, this warning is based on how the two work in theory rather than strong human studies, so it isn't certain. Still, because both can push blood pressure and heart rate up on their own, I'd want you to check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES
2 of 3Amphetamine also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research suggests that yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe bark, inhibits CYP2D6 enzyme activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the concern with pairing yohimbe and amphetamine. Lab studies hint that yohimbine, the active part of yohimbe, may slow down a liver enzyme called CYP2D6, which helps your body process amphetamine. If that pathway is slowed, amphetamine could linger a bit longer and hit harder than usual. With a stimulant, that can mean a racing or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, anxiety, trouble sleeping, and higher blood pressure.
What makes me extra cautious is that yohimbe on its own already tends to raise heart rate and blood pressure, so stacking it with a stimulant could amplify those effects even apart from the enzyme issue. To be fair, this interaction is theoretical and only based on lab data, not real patients. Still, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

STIMULANT DRUGS
3 of 3Amphetamine also falls under STIMULANT DRUGS.
Yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe, has sympathomimetic effects and increases blood pressure in a dose-dependent manner. Theoretically, taking yohimbe with stimulant drugs can have additive stimulant and hypertensive effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to keep in mind if you take an amphetamine like Adderall, Dyanavel, or Mydayis for ADHD: this supplement and your medication both rev up the same part of your nervous system. Amphetamine already raises heart rate and blood pressure and can make you feel jittery or wired. Yohimbe (through its active compound, yohimbine) pushes in the same direction, so stacking them could add together and lead to a noticeably higher blood pressure, a racing or pounding heart, anxiety, or trouble sleeping.
I'll be honest, this concern is theoretical and based on how both work, not on hard studies. Still, because both clearly affect your heart and blood pressure, I'd talk with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them rather than guessing.

- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

About Yohimbe
What is Yohimbe?
- Erectile dysfunction
- Low sex drive
- Sexual performance
- Weight loss
- Athletic performance
Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate. Because of these safety concerns, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.
About Amphetamine
What Is Amphetamine Used For?
