Theoretically, yohimbe might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2D6 substrates.

Here's the basic idea with these two. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to break down dextromethorphan, the cough suppressant in products like Benylin and Theraflu. Yohimbe contains yohimbine, which in lab studies appears to slow that same enzyme down. If the enzyme works slower, dextromethorphan could clear out of your system less quickly and build up a bit. That might mean more of its usual effects, like dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, or feeling foggy or restless.

I want to be honest about the evidence, though. This is only based on test-tube research, not real people, so it's theoretical. Still, since over-the-counter yohimbe doses vary so much and yohimbe on its own can raise blood pressure and heart rate, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist before combining them.

Here's the gist for combining yohimbe with dextromethorphan, your cough medicine. Lab studies suggest that yohimbe may speed up an enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the systems your body uses to break down dextromethorphan. If that enzyme works faster, your body could clear the cough medicine a little quicker, which might make it slightly less effective at quieting your cough.

I want to be straight with you, though: this is rated minor and is based only on test-tube research, not on real people. So in everyday use it's unlikely to cause a noticeable problem. Honestly, my bigger concern with yohimbe is its own side effects, like raising your blood pressure and heart rate. If you're thinking about using both, check in with your pharmacist first.

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate. Because of these safety concerns, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

What Is Dextromethorphan Used For?

Brand names: Hold, Benylin Adult, Benylin Pediatric, Theraflu Thin Strips Long Acting Cough, Neo Citran Thin Strips Cough

Dextromethorphan temporarily relieves cough due to minor throat and bronchial irritation, such as the kind that comes with the common cold or breathing in irritants. It also helps reduce the urge to cough so you — or your child — can get to sleep.

Some products, including CVS Long Acting Cough and Premier Value Tussin Cough oral liquids, are also indicated to help loosen phlegm (mucus) and thin bronchial secretions to help drain the airways.
