Hydrochlorothiazide falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Yohimbe interacts with.

Theoretically, yohimbe might reduce the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe, is an alpha-2 adrenoceptor antagonist and has been reported to increase blood pressure in clinical research. Theoretically, concomitant use of yohimbe and antihypertensive drugs can interfere with blood pressure control.

Here's the simple version: you're taking hydrochlorothiazide (a water pill) to help lower your blood pressure. Yohimbe contains yohimbine, which can do the opposite and actually push blood pressure up, sometimes along with a fast or pounding heartbeat. So the worry is that yohimbe could work against your water pill and make it harder to keep your numbers where you want them.

This isn't a chemical clash in how your body breaks down the drug. It's more of a tug-of-war on blood pressure itself. The concern is based on how yohimbine works rather than strong studies, but since the goal of your medication is steady, controlled pressure, I'd play it safe. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding yohimbe, and don't change your hydrochlorothiazide on your own.

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate. Because of these safety concerns, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

What Is Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Esidrix, Hydro, Microzide, HydroDiuril, Hydro-D, Oretic, Aquazide H, Aquazide, HCTZ

Hydrochlorothiazide treats high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children, either alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

It also treats edema (fluid buildup) linked to congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis (liver scarring), and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome. Hydrochlorothiazide tablets are additionally indicated for edema caused by corticosteroid or estrogen therapy, and edema from acute glomerulonephritis or chronic renal failure. Inzirqo (the oral suspension) is specifically approved for both hypertension and edema in adult and pediatric patients.
