Why this applies to Trimipramine

Trimipramine falls under TRICYCLIC ANTIDEPRESSANTS (TCAs) — the group Yohimbe interacts with.

Theoretically, taking yohimbe with TCAs can increase adverse effects.
A small clinical study in patients taking TCAs for at least 4 weeks shows that receiving doses of intravenous yohimbine 2.5-20 mg daily for up to 7 days precipitates severe anxiety, agitation, and tremor. The effects of yohimbe bark itself are unclear; oral yohimbe bark contains 0.6% to 1.38% yohimbine, but it is unclear how much is absorbed.

Here's the concern with pairing yohimbe and trimipramine. Trimipramine is an active medication on its own (not a prodrug), so the issue isn't really about how your body breaks it down. Instead, both can rev up the same stress signaling in your body. A small study found that giving yohimbine to people already on a tricyclic antidepressant triggered severe anxiety, agitation, and tremor. Combined, they may also push your blood pressure and heart rate up.

That said, this is mostly theoretical, and we honestly don't know how much yohimbine your body absorbs from over-the-counter yohimbe bark. Doses vary a lot between products. To be safe, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate. Because of these safety concerns, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

What Is Trimipramine Used For?

Trimipramine capsules are indicated for the relief of symptoms of depression. Endogenous depression — depression that arises from within, rather than from an obvious outside cause — is more likely to respond to treatment than other types.

In clinical studies, trimipramine worked as well as imipramine in hospitalized patients with depression, and was comparable to amitriptyline in less severely depressed outpatients.
