Theoretically, CYP3A4 inhibitors might increase the levels and adverse effects of yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe bark.
In vitro and clinical research shows that the yohimbe bark constituent, yohimbine, is metabolized by CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP3A4 might increase the levels and adverse effects of yohimbine.

Here's the gist: your body relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear out yohimbine, the active part of yohimbe. Erythromycin happens to slow that same enzyme down. So when you pair the two, yohimbine can hang around longer than it should and build up in your system.

The practical worry is more of yohimbe's known side effects, things like a racing heartbeat, jitteriness, anxiety, and a spike in blood pressure. I'll be honest with you, this is a theoretical concern based on how the drugs behave in the lab, not something proven in lots of people, so I don't want you to panic. Still, since over-the-counter yohimbe doses vary wildly and can be strong, please run this combo by your pharmacist or doctor before taking them together.

Here's the gist with yohimbe and erythromycin. Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help process erythromycin, and lab studies suggest yohimbe may speed that enzyme up a bit. If that happened in real life, your body could clear the antibiotic a little faster, leaving lower levels and possibly making it work less well against your infection.

The good news: this is a theoretical concern based only on test-tube research, not on people, and it's rated minor. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, when you're fighting an infection, you want your antibiotic working at full strength. Since over-the-counter yohimbe can also raise blood pressure and heart rate, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate. Because of these safety concerns, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

About Erythromycin

What Is Erythromycin Used For?

Brand names: Erythro-S, Erythrocin, Ethril

Erythromycin treats bacterial infections caused by susceptible organisms. Oral and intravenous forms are used for upper and lower respiratory tract infections, skin and soft-tissue infections, pertussis (whooping cough), Legionnaires' disease, sexually transmitted infections (gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia), listeriosis, and other conditions. Erythrocin Lactobionate IV and erythromycin lactobionate injection are specifically for patients who cannot take oral medication or who need rapid, high blood levels due to severe infection — IV therapy should be switched to oral as soon as appropriate.

Erythromycin topical solution 2% and Ery 2% Pads (swabs) are indicated only for the topical treatment of acne vulgaris (acne) and are applied directly to the skin — they are not used for internal infections.
