Yohimbe and Pantoprazole

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Pantoprazole

Pantoprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Yohimbe interacts with.

Theoretically, yohimbe might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yohimbe extract induces CYP3A4 enzymes.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with yohimbe and pantoprazole. Yohimbe has shown, in test-tube studies only, that it might speed up a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Pantoprazole is partly broken down by that enzyme, so in theory a faster enzyme could clear it a little quicker and make it slightly less effective. In real life that might mean a bit more breakthrough heartburn or reflux, though honestly this is a weak, lab-only concern.

I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Pantoprazole isn't a high-stakes drug where tiny shifts cause harm, and the evidence here is purely theoretical. My bigger worry with yohimbe is its own side effects, like raising blood pressure and heart rate. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it.

About Yohimbe

What is Yohimbe?

Yohimbe
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Low sex drive
  • Sexual performance
  • Weight loss
  • Athletic performance

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate. Because of these safety concerns, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

About Pantoprazole

What Is Pantoprazole Used For?

Brand names: Protonix, Pantoloc, Protonix IV

Pantoprazole treats erosive esophagitis (damage to the lining of the esophagus) linked to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a long-term condition where stomach acid backs up. It is also used for pathological hypersecretory conditions, including Zollinger-Ellison (ZE) syndrome, where the stomach makes far too much acid.

Which use applies depends on the product. The oral delayed-release tablets and the delayed-release oral suspension (granules), including Protonix, cover short-term healing, maintenance of healing, and the excess-acid conditions. The intravenous (IV) forms, including Protonix I.V., are for adults with GERD and a history of erosive esophagitis for a short time, and for ZE syndrome and similar conditions.
