Theoretically, yohimbe might reduce the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe, is an alpha-2 adrenoceptor antagonist and has been reported to increase blood pressure in clinical research. Theoretically, concomitant use of yohimbe and antihypertensive drugs can interfere with blood pressure control.

Here's the tug-of-war to be aware of: nifedipine works to lower your blood pressure and ease chest pain by relaxing your blood vessels. Yohimbe, through its active compound yohimbine, tends to do the opposite. It can push blood pressure up and speed up your heart rate. So taking them together may partly cancel out the benefit you're getting from nifedipine.

In real life, that could mean your blood pressure isn't as well controlled as it should be, or you notice a racing heartbeat or jitteriness. Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on how yohimbine behaves, not from large studies on this exact combo. Still, since yohimbe supplements vary a lot in strength and can be hard on the heart, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them.

Theoretically, CYP3A4 inhibitors might increase the levels and adverse effects of yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe bark.
In vitro and clinical research shows that the yohimbe bark constituent, yohimbine, is metabolized by CYP3A4 enzymes. Theoretically, drugs that inhibit CYP3A4 might increase the levels and adverse effects of yohimbine.

Here's the gist for these two together. Nifedipine gently blocks an enzyme in your liver called CYP3A4, and that same enzyme is what your body uses to clear yohimbine (the active compound in yohimbe). So in theory, taking yohimbe alongside nifedipine could slow down how fast yohimbine breaks down, letting it build up and hit harder.

The catch is that yohimbe already tends to raise blood pressure and speed up your heart rate, which works directly against why you're taking nifedipine in the first place. More yohimbine on board could mean stronger jitters, palpitations, anxiety, or blood pressure swings. This concern is theoretical and based on how the drugs work, not hard outcome studies, but since yohimbe can be unpredictable anyway, please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Here's the gist for these two together. Your body clears nifedipine using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies suggest yohimbe may speed that enzyme up, which could clear nifedipine a little faster and leave less of it working. In plain terms, your blood pressure or chest pain medicine might not do its job quite as well, so you could see slightly higher blood pressure or more angina.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is. It comes only from test-tube research, the interaction is rated minor, and yohimbe itself can independently raise blood pressure and heart rate, which works against a blood pressure medicine. Before combining them, please check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate. Because of these safety concerns, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

What Is Nifedipine Used For?

Brand names: Procardia XL, Adalat PA, Adalat, Nifedin, Nifed PA, Nifed, Procardia, Adalat XL, Adalat CC, Adalat LA, Adalat Retard, Adipine MR, Adipine XL, Cardilate MR, Coracten SR, Coracten XL, Fortipine LA 40, Hypolar Retard 20, Nifedipress MR, Nifopress Retard, Tensipine MR

Nifedipine treats high blood pressure (hypertension), chronic stable angina (chest pain brought on by physical effort), and vasospastic angina (chest pain caused by spasm of the coronary arteries, sometimes called Prinzmetal's angina). Lowering blood pressure with nifedipine helps reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

The capsule form is approved for vasospastic angina and chronic stable angina only — it is not approved for high blood pressure. The extended-release tablet (including Procardia) covers all three uses: vasospastic angina, chronic stable angina, and high blood pressure.
