Why this applies to Naproxen

Naproxen falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Yohimbe interacts with.

Theoretically, combining yohimbe bark with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs might have additive effects; however, this has not been reported in clinical research.
Research in healthy adults shows that taking yohimbine, a constituent of yohimbe bark, in doses of 8 mg or more, seems to inhibit platelet aggregation in vitro by binding to the alpha-2 adrenoceptor. The effects of yohimbe bark itself are unclear; yohimbe bark contains 0.6% to 1.38% yohimbine, but it is unclear how much is absorbed.

Here's the gist for naproxen (Naprosyn, Aleve) plus yohimbe. Naproxen is an NSAID, and one of its known quirks is that it can make your blood a little slower to clot, which is why it can sometimes raise the risk of bruising or stomach bleeding. Yohimbe contains yohimbine, and in lab studies (8 mg or more) yohimbine appeared to slow platelets too. So in theory, the two together might nudge bleeding risk a bit higher.

I want to be honest, though: this is theoretical, based only on test-tube work, and it's never actually been reported in real patients. We also don't know how much yohimbine your body absorbs from bark supplements. Bigger picture, yohimbe's effects on blood pressure and heart rate worry me more. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before pairing these.

Naproxen also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, yohimbe might decrease the levels and clinical effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that yohimbe extract induces CYP1A2 enzymes.

Here's the gist for naproxen (Naprosyn, Aleve and others). Naproxen is an active pain reliever as you take it, not a prodrug that needs switching on. One of the liver enzymes that helps break it down is called CYP1A2. Lab studies suggest yohimbe may speed up that enzyme, which could clear naproxen a little faster and, in theory, make it work a touch less well for your arthritis pain, swelling, or stiffness.

That said, this is a minor, theoretical concern based only on test-tube research, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. The bigger issue is yohimbe itself, which can raise blood pressure and heart rate. Before pairing these, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor.

Yohimbe is a West African tree bark that contains yohimbine, a compound mainly promoted for erectile dysfunction and as an aphrodisiac. A prescription form of yohimbine has some evidence for erectile dysfunction, but over-the-counter yohimbe supplements vary widely in content and can cause serious side effects like high blood pressure and fast heart rate. Because of these safety concerns, talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

What Is Naproxen Used For?

Brand names: Naprosyn, Naprelan, Anaprox, Anaprox DS, Naproxyn, Navalbine, Naproxen, Naprosyn EC, Napro-Na, Aleve, Arthroxen, Synflex, EC-Naprosyn

Naproxen tablets, naproxen sodium tablets, and naproxen oral suspension are used to relieve the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis. They are also used for tendonitis, bursitis, and acute gout, and for managing pain and primary dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps).

Naproxen Sodium Controlled-Release Tablets are indicated for the same conditions plus the relief of mild to moderate pain. Several over-the-counter naproxen sodium products are indicated for the temporary relief of minor aches and pains from headache, backache, muscular aches, toothache, menstrual cramps, minor arthritis pain, and the common cold, and to temporarily reduce fever.
