Here's the gist with these two: baclofen and the amino acid phenylalanine appear to compete for the same "doorway" in your gut that ferries them into your bloodstream. When phenylalanine hogs that transporter, less baclofen may get absorbed, which could mean lower blood levels and a weaker effect. In real life, that might show up as muscle stiffness, spasms, or pain that aren't as well controlled as usual.

I'd keep this in perspective, though. This concern comes from lab and animal research, not solid human studies, so it's more of a theoretical heads-up than a proven problem. If you take phenylalanine as a concentrated supplement, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor, especially if your spasticity seems to be creeping back. Please don't adjust your baclofen on your own.

About Baclofen

What Is Baclofen Used For?

Brand names: Lioresal, Ozobax, Lyvispah, Fleqsuvy

Baclofen treats spasticity — the stiffness, muscle spasms, and rigidity that can come from neurological conditions. Oral forms (tablets, solutions, suspension, and granules) are used for spasticity from multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injuries or diseases. They are not intended for muscle spasm caused by rheumatic conditions like arthritis.

Intrathecal baclofen — delivered directly into the fluid around the spinal cord through an implanted pump — is reserved for severe spasticity that hasn't responded to oral baclofen, or when oral doses cause intolerable side effects. Gablofen (intrathecal injection) is specifically indicated for adults and children age 4 and older with spasticity of spinal or cerebral origin.
