HelloPharmacist Scorecard of L-Theanine by Earthborn Elements
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-theanine, an amino acid found naturally in tea. L-theanine is thought to promote calm and focus without causing sedation.
The capsule itself is made from gelatin.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-theanine is possibly effective for cognitive function based on the evidence we hold. For age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer disease, generalized anxiety, OCD, and cancer, the evidence isn't strong enough to rate it one way or the other.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-theanine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults for short-term use, though long-term safety hasn't been well studied. Some people report headaches, drowsiness, longer sleep, or more vivid dreams.
Because there isn't enough safety data during pregnancy and breastfeeding, it's best to avoid it in both cases—talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized guidance if you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on blood pressure medications (theanine may lower pressure further), sedating medications like sleep aids or anti-anxiety drugs, or any medications that affect serotonin levels.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Theanine may be worth considering if you're looking to support focus and calm, though evidence for anxiety disorders is still limited. If you take blood pressure medications or sedating drugs, check with your doctor or pharmacist first—theanine could strengthen their effects.
Long-term use safety data is sparse, so discuss your plans with your own healthcare provider.

L-Theanine by Earthborn Elements Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L-Theanine by Earthborn Elements can interact with a few important medication groups.
The most serious concern is with blood pressure medications—theanine may lower blood pressure on its own, and when combined with antihypertensive drugs, it could strengthen their effect and potentially drop your pressure too much.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Theanine may also add to the drowsiness caused by sedating medications (central nervous system depressants), though it's unclear how much this matters in real-world use. Additionally, studies on theanine and serotonin levels conflict—some suggest it raises serotonin, others suggest it lowers it—but there are no documented cases of it triggering serotonin syndrome or related problems.
Although we have interaction data for L-theanine, altogether these interactions span 565 individual medications. Before you start this supplement, run your current medications through the checker on this page to see if any fall into these categories.

For each ingredient in L-Theanine with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Theanine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
