L-Theanine Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking L-Theanine against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of L-Theanine by Prescribed Choice
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-theanine, an amino acid naturally found in green tea. Theanine is thought to promote relaxation and calm focus without making you drowsy — though the evidence for many of its uses is still thin.
The capsule also contains microcrystalline cellulose, rice flour, ascorbyl palmitate, and silica as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for L-theanine is mixed. It's possibly effective for general cognitive function — that's the strongest rating in our data.
For age-related mental decline, Alzheimer's disease, anxiety disorders, and cancer, we don't have enough reliable evidence to say whether it works. If you're considering it for something beyond cognitive support, talk it over with your doctor.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Theanine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults for short-term use, but we don't know much about what happens if you take it long-term. Common side effects include headaches, drowsiness, longer sleep, and more vivid dreams.
One child reported a subtle facial tic after starting theanine, but the tic stopped when she quit — and she'd had tics before, so the link wasn't clear. Avoid this supplement during pregnancy and breastfeeding — there isn't enough safety data to know either way, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this, ask your doctor or pharmacist to check it against: blood pressure medications (the biggest concern here), sedatives or sleep aids, and antidepressants, especially those that affect serotonin. No interactions are documented for any other major drug types in our data.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Theanine may help with focus and cognitive sharpness, but the evidence is strongest for that use alone. If you take blood pressure medication, sedatives, or certain antidepressants, check with your doctor or pharmacist first — theanine can interact with all three.

L-Theanine by Prescribed Choice Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L-Theanine by Prescribed Choice interacts with blood pressure medications and, to a lesser degree, sedatives and certain antidepressants.
The most serious concern is with blood pressure drugs (antihypertensives): theanine can lower blood pressure on its own, and combining it with your blood pressure medication could lower it too much.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Theanine may also add to the drowsy or calming effects of CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications), though it's unclear how often this causes a real problem in practice. Similarly, some serotonergic drugs (certain antidepressants) theoretically could interact, but no cases of serotonin syndrome or related side effects have been reported with theanine, and study findings on its serotonin effects conflict.
Altogether, these interactions span 565 individual medications. Use the medication checker below to see if any of yours are on that list before you start.

For each ingredient in L-Theanine with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
L-Theanine
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theanine might lower blood pressure, potentiating the effects of antihypertensive drugs.
Animal research shows that theanine can lower blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Theoretically, concomitant use of theanine and antihypertensive drugs might potentiate the antihypertensive activity.
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, theanine might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Theoretically, theanine may compete with glutamate and/or increase plasma gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels, which could cause CNS depression. In one clinical study, some subjects taking oral theanine reported drowsiness.
Serotonergic Drugs
Clinical studies regarding the effects of L-theanine on serotonin levels are conflicting. Some studies suggest it can increase serotonin levels in the brain while others report that it may decrease them. Nevertheless, there have been no reports of l-theanine being a causative agent in serotonergic-related side effects or serotonin syndrome.
