Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Phosphatidyl-Serine by Prescribed Choice is a single-ingredient softgel containing phosphatidylserine, a compound naturally found in cell membranes. It's inactive ingredients are gelatin, glycerin, borage oil, and water — these are the capsule shell and carrier materials.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Phosphatidylserine is possibly effective for age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer disease. For athletic performance, cognitive function, ADHD, and dementia, the evidence isn't established — we don't have reliable data to say whether it works for those uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Phosphatidylserine is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety isn't fully established. The most common side effects are flatulence, gastrointestinal upset, headache, insomnia, and nausea.
Insomnia is more likely at higher doses (around 600 mg), and gut upset can happen at doses of 200–300 mg daily. There isn't enough safety data for pregnancy — the facts advise against use during pregnancy.
Safety while breastfeeding is also unknown, so the data advises against it. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this is right for you if you're pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take Phosphatidyl-Serine, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you use anticholinergic drugs (for overactive bladder, nausea, or other conditions) or cholinergic drugs. Both interactions are rated Moderate — phosphatidylserine may reduce how well anticholinergics work or add to the effects of cholinergic medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Phosphatidyl-Serine may help with age-related memory decline or Alzheimer disease if you're looking for a possibly effective option. If you take anticholinergic or cholinergic medications, you'll want to clear it with your doctor or pharmacist first because of the theoretical risk it could interfere with them.
It's generally well tolerated but can cause stomach upset or sleep problems, especially at higher doses. Talk it over with your own healthcare provider before starting.
