What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: phosphatidylserine (delivered as Neuro-PS), a naturally occurring compound found in cell membranes. The supplement also includes gelatin, vegetable glycerin, and natural caramel color as inactive ingredients that form the softgel capsule.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Phosphatidylserine is possibly effective for age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer disease, according to the evidence we hold. For athletic performance, ADHD, general cognitive function, and dementia, the reliable evidence isn't established enough to rate it.
The data we have doesn't give a clear answer on how well it works for those uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Phosphatidylserine is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety hasn't been fully established. The most common side effects in people who take it orally are flatulence, nausea, headache, gastrointestinal upset, and insomnia — and insomnia tends to be more likely at higher doses (around 600 mg).
Gastrointestinal upset can show up even at lower doses of 200–300 mg per day. There isn't enough safety information to use this during pregnancy, so avoidance is recommended.
Safety while breastfeeding is also unknown, so it's best to avoid it then as well. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this supplement is right for you if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this supplement, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take anticholinergic drugs (like certain allergy, cold, or overactive-bladder medications) or cholinergic drugs (like those for myasthenia gravis or certain types of glaucoma). Both categories can interact with phosphatidylserine with Moderate severity.
The supplement may reduce the effectiveness of anticholinergics or add to the effects of cholinergics.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Phosphatidyl Serine Complex might be worth considering if you're interested in supporting cognitive health as you age, since it shows promise for age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer disease. However, you'll want to be careful if you take anticholinergic or cholinergic medications — the interaction potential is real.
Have a conversation with your doctor or pharmacist before you start, especially if you're on any prescription medications.
