Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This supplement contains one active ingredient: phosphatidylserine (branded as Sharp PS Green), a naturally occurring fat-like substance found in cell membranes. It's included at 100 mg per softgel capsule.

The capsule also contains inactive ingredients — medium chain triglycerides, gelatin, glycerin, purified water, silicon dioxide, natural mixed tocopherols, and ascorbyl palmitate — which serve as the carrier, binder, and preservative.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: supports healthy cognitive function.
  • We looked for evidence on: Age-related cognitive decline, Cognitive function, Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), memory, mental performance, brain health.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Phosphatidylserine is rated "Possibly Effective" for Age-related cognitive decline (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Phosphatidylserine is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Cognitive function.

Phosphatidylserine is possibly effective for age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer disease, according to the evidence we hold. For athletic performance, ADHD, general cognitive function, and dementia, there isn't enough reliable evidence yet to rate how well it works.

If you're taking this for one of those latter conditions, the science isn't settled.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Phosphatidylserine is generally well tolerated in studies, though long-term safety hasn't been fully established. The most common side effects are flatulence, gastrointestinal upset, headache, insomnia, and nausea.

Insomnia is more likely at higher doses (around 600 mg), and gastrointestinal upset can show up at doses around 200–300 mg per day. There isn't enough safety data to know whether it's safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

The data advises against use in both situations — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about your individual circumstances.

Formula

Healthy Origins Sunflower PS featuring Sharp PS Green is a unique, soy-free source of phosphatidylserine derived from European, Non-GMO sunflower lecithin. Phosphatidylserine is a phospholipid compound found naturally in brain cell membranes, however, with advancing age, our natural phosphatidylserine levels can diminish, which may impact our cognitive abilities. Unfortunately, obtaining significant amounts of phosphatidylserine through our diet has proven to be quite difficult. Therefore, many individuals have chosen to take phosphatidylserine supplements. Supplementation with phosphatidylserine may help to replenish depressed levels of phosphatidylserine, enhance cognitive focus, nourish brain cell membranes and support healthy cognitive function.
