What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-tryptophan 500 mg per capsule. L-tryptophan is an amino acid—a building block protein—that your body converts into serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in mood, sleep, and other functions.
The capsule also holds inactive ingredients: cellulose, magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide.
Does it work?
Not established
For depression, the evidence rates L-tryptophan as possibly ineffective. For anxiety, athletic performance, teeth grinding (bruxism), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), we don't have enough reliable evidence to say whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Tryptophan is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. Common side effects include belching, diarrhea, drowsiness, dry mouth, flatulence, headache, heartburn, lightheadedness, nausea, stomach pain, blurred vision, and vomiting.
In rare cases, it has been linked to a serious neurological condition called eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS), though nearly all documented cases came from contaminated product made by a single Japanese manufacturer in 1989—a history worth knowing about. The safety data advises against L-tryptophan during pregnancy because there isn't enough information to confirm it's safe.
It should be avoided while breastfeeding as well. If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Before you take this product, check your exact medications against CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, strong pain relievers) and serotonergic drugs (antidepressants, migraine medications, and others that work on serotonin). These are the medication types with documented Major and Moderate interactions with L-tryptophan.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Tryptophan may be worth considering if you're interested in mood or sleep support, but the evidence for depression is weak and other uses lack solid data. If you take any sedatives, sleep aids, antidepressants, migraine drugs, or other serotonin-active medications, you must check them here first—this product carries real interaction risk.
Pregnant or breastfeeding? Skip it and talk with your pharmacist or doctor.

L-Tryptophan 500 Milligrams by Montiff Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L-Tryptophan by Montiff can interact with medications in your cabinet.
The most serious concern is with CNS depressants—drugs that slow your brain activity, like sedatives, sleep aids, and some pain relievers. Taking L-tryptophan with these may pile on drowsiness and fatigue; the supplement itself causes both, so the combined effect could be significant.
Clinical research documents that L-tryptophan does cause fatigue and drowsiness on its own.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The second major concern is serotonergic drugs—medications that work on serotonin, a brain chemical that affects mood. These include antidepressants (especially SSRIs and SNRIs), some migraine drugs, and others.
L-tryptophan is a building block your body uses to make serotonin, so combining it with serotonergic drugs might push serotonin levels too high and raise the risk of serotonin syndrome—a serious condition with agitation, confusion, rapid heart rate, and fever—plus potential narrowing of blood vessels in the brain.
Altogether, these interactions span 394 individual medications. Use the interaction checker on this page to look up your exact drugs before you start.
