Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This product contains one active ingredient: L-tyrosine, an amino acid your body uses to make neurotransmitters and thyroid hormones. The capsule also holds gelatin, magnesium stearate, and silicon dioxide as inactive ingredients (binders and flow agents).

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: mental focus and stress coping support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Cognitive function, Fatigue, Stress, Sleep deprivation, Athletic performance, alertness — and 1 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Tyrosine is rated "Possibly Effective" for Cognitive function (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Tyrosine is rated "Possibly Ineffective" for Athletic performance.
  • Also on file: Tyrosine is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Fatigue, Sleep deprivation, Stress.

L-tyrosine is effective for phenylketonuria (PKU), a genetic condition. It's possibly effective for cognitive function and memory.

The evidence for athletic performance is insufficient to show it works, and we don't have enough reliable data on whether it helps alcohol use disorder or dementia.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Tyrosine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults, but there's not enough safety data to recommend regular supplemental use without talking to your doctor first. The most common side effects reported are fatigue, headache, heartburn, and nausea.

At very high doses, headache and fatigue increase; combined with other supplements (5-hydroxytryptophan and carbidopa), it can cause drowsiness, agitation, diarrhea, and vomiting — effects that ease when the dose is lowered. There isn't enough data on safety during pregnancy or breastfeeding to know either way; talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized guidance.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

L-tyrosine may be worth considering if you have PKU or want to explore support for memory and focus — the evidence is strongest for PKU and modest for cognitive effects. If you take levodopa for Parkinson's or any thyroid medication, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, since tyrosine can interfere with how they work.

Anyone taking regular medication should confirm there's no interaction before adding this supplement.

Formula

L-Tyrosine is a non-essential amino acid that plays an important role in the production of melanin (the pigment that gives skin and hair their color) and neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine. In addition, because L-Tyrosine is necessary for the synthesis of thyroid hormone and epinephrine (adrenaline), L-Tyrosine promotes healthy glandular function and stress response. Certain research publications indicate that L-Tyrosine may help support the following: Supports mental alertness & stress response. Supports healthy glandular function. Supports brain function.

L-Tyrosine 500 mg by Best Naturals: Common Questions

Does L-Tyrosine 500 mg by Best Naturals interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, L-Tyrosine 500 mg has a known interaction with 21 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
L-Tyrosine 500 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What is L-tyrosine and what does it do in my body?
L-tyrosine is an amino acid your body uses to make important signaling chemicals (neurotransmitters) in your brain and thyroid hormones that control your metabolism. That's why it's been studied for memory, focus, and thyroid health.
I'm on levopopa for Parkinson's — can I take this?
Tyrosine competes with levodopa for absorption, which might make your medication less effective. You can take them together if you space the doses at least 2 hours apart, but talk with your doctor first to make sure that timing works with your routine.
What are the most common side effects?
Fatigue, headache, heartburn, and nausea are the most commonly reported side effects. They tend to happen at higher doses, and lowering the amount usually helps.
Is it safe to take while breastfeeding?
There isn't enough safety data on tyrosine during breastfeeding to know either way. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it while nursing so you can make the best choice for you and your baby.
Does L-tyrosine actually improve memory and focus?
The evidence shows it's possibly effective for memory and cognitive function, but it's not definitive. It's most strongly supported for treating PKU, a genetic condition.
