Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-tyrosine, an amino acid your body naturally makes and uses to produce dopamine, norepinephrine, and thyroid hormones. The capsule also contains gelatin and vegetable lubricant as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
L-tyrosine is effective for phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare genetic condition where the body can't process another amino acid properly. The evidence suggests it's possibly effective for cognitive function and memory, though more research would strengthen that case.
For athletic performance, the evidence points to it being possibly ineffective. The data we hold isn't strong enough yet to rate it for alcohol use disorder or dementia.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-tyrosine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults, but there isn't enough safety data to recommend regular supplemental use without talking to your doctor first. The most common side effects in studies were fatigue, headache, heartburn, and nausea.
Larger doses can bring on headache and fatigue; these effects tend to improve if you lower the dose. There isn't enough safety data during pregnancy or breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting L-tyrosine if you take levodopa (Moderate severity — it may reduce the drug's effectiveness, and you'd need to space doses 2 hours apart) or thyroid hormone medications like levothyroxine (Moderate severity — tyrosine might boost thyroid hormone levels). No other interactions are documented for this ingredient.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with strong clinical evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-tyrosine might help with memory and thinking if the evidence holds up with more research, and it's definitely useful if you have PKU. If you take levodopa for Parkinson's or thyroid hormone medication, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist first — the timing and dosing could matter.
For anyone else in good health, it's generally well tolerated, but there's no reason to take it regularly without professional guidance.

L-Tyrosine 500 mg by Progressive Professional from Progressive Laboratories Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L-Tyrosine 500 mg by Progressive Professional does interact with medications — specifically blood pressure and movement disorder drugs.
The most serious concern is with levodopa (used for Parkinson's disease): tyrosine and levodopa compete for absorption in your gut, and tyrosine might make levodopa less effective. If you take levodopa, separate your tyrosine dose from it by at least 2 hours.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Thyroid hormone medications are a moderate concern too. Tyrosine is a building block your body uses to make thyroid hormones, so taking it alongside thyroid drugs might boost hormone levels beyond what your prescription is meant to deliver.
Altogether, these interactions span 21 individual medications. Use the interaction checker on this page with your exact prescriptions before you start.
