HelloPharmacist Scorecard of L-Tyrosine 500 mg by Solaray
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains a single active ingredient: L-Tyrosine, an amino acid your body uses to make several important compounds, including thyroid hormones, dopamine, and norepinephrine. Each capsule delivers 500 mg.
The inactive ingredients are cellulose and magnesium stearate (a binder and flow agent).
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
L-Tyrosine is effective for phenylketonuria (PKU), a genetic condition in which your body can't process phenylalanine properly — tyrosine becomes essential because your body normally makes it from phenylalanine. It's possibly effective for cognitive function and memory.
For athletic performance, the evidence suggests it's possibly ineffective. For alcohol use disorder and dementia, we don't have enough reliable evidence to know whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-Tyrosine is generally well tolerated in healthy adults, but talk to a healthcare provider before using it regularly. The most common side effects are fatigue, headache, heartburn, and nausea — these tend to happen at higher doses.
No serious adverse effects have been documented, though a thorough safety study hasn't been completed. There isn't enough safety data for use during pregnancy, and there's not enough data to know whether it's safe while breastfeeding — talk with your doctor or pharmacist about this before taking it if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, double-check with your pharmacist if you take levodopa (Moderate interaction — it may reduce levodopa's effectiveness) or thyroid hormone medications like levothyroxine (Moderate interaction — tyrosine could raise your thyroid hormone levels).
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Tyrosine is worth considering if you're looking to support cognitive function or memory, or if you have PKU. If you take levodopa for Parkinson's disease or thyroid hormone medication, check with your pharmacist first — spacing and dose adjustments may be needed.
Talk to your doctor before starting regular use, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or take other medications.

L-Tyrosine 500 mg by Solaray Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L-Tyrosine 500 mg by Solaray does interact with certain medications.
The most serious concern is with levodopa (used for Parkinson's disease). Tyrosine and levodopa both use the same absorption pathway in your small intestine, so they compete with each other — tyrosine may reduce how well levodopa works.
If you take levodopa, space your tyrosine dose at least 2 hours apart from it.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
L-Tyrosine can also have additive effects with thyroid hormone medications (like levothyroxine). Because tyrosine is a building block for thyroid hormones, taking it alongside thyroid medication might increase your thyroid hormone levels too much.
You should check your exact medications with the search tool on this page before starting. Altogether, these interactions span 21 individual medications.

Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, tyrosine might have additive effects with thyroid hormone medications.
Tyrosine is a precursor to thyroxine and might increase levels of thyroid hormones.
