Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: fresh lemon balm flowering tops extract. Lemon balm is an herb traditionally used to ease stress and support mood.
The liquid form also includes distilled water and ethyl alcohol as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Lemon balm is possibly effective for cold sores (herpes labialis) when applied or taken by mouth, and possibly effective for easing stress and supporting mood. The evidence supporting these uses is modest—more research would help confirm how well it works and at what dose—but the data we hold does suggest a real benefit for these purposes.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lemon balm is generally well tolerated for short-term use in most healthy adults. In clinical trials, dizziness and sedation have been reported, though they don't appear to happen more often with lemon balm than placebo; mixing it with alcohol doesn't seem to affect reaction time or thinking.
High doses and long-term safety haven't been well studied, so stick to short-term use unless your doctor advises otherwise. Not enough reliable safety data exists for pregnancy, so it's best avoided during pregnancy unless your doctor advises otherwise.
For breastfeeding, limited information is available—talk to your doctor before using it while nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you use CNS depressants (sleep aids, sedatives, anxiety medications, or narcotic pain relievers) or thyroid hormone replacement therapy—both carry Moderate-severity interaction risks with lemon balm.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Lemon balm may be worth considering if you're looking to ease stress or cold sores, and it's generally well tolerated short-term. However, skip it or talk with your doctor first if you take sedatives, sleep aids, or thyroid hormone replacement therapy—the interactions are real and worth managing.
Definitely run through your exact medications with your doctor or pharmacist before you start.

Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of lemon balm might have additive effects with CNS depressant drugs.
Lemon balm seems to have CNS depressant activity in animals and in humans.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, lemon balm might interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
In vitro, constituents of lemon balm extract bind to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), preventing TSH receptor-binding and leading to the inhibition of TSH-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity. In animals, lemon balm extract has been shown to decrease levels of circulating TSH and inhibit thyroid secretion.
