What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product is a single-ingredient powder: lemon balm extract. There are no inactive fillers or other ingredients listed.
Lemon balm is a mint-family herb traditionally used to support relaxation and mood.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
In the data we hold, lemon balm extract is rated possibly effective for cold sores (herpes labialis) and for stress and depression. That means some clinical evidence supports its use for these purposes, but the evidence isn't yet conclusive.
Your own experience may differ, and it's worth giving it a fair trial period if you decide to take it.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lemon balm is generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults, though long-term safety and the effects of high doses haven't been well studied. In trials, dizziness and drowsiness were reported, but they occurred at about the same rate as with placebo.
One uncommon case linked a multi-ingredient product containing lemon balm to a temporary heart rhythm disturbance; it's unclear whether lemon balm alone was responsible. The safety data during pregnancy advises against use unless your doctor specifically recommends it.
For breastfeeding, limited safety information exists, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, double-check with your own doctor or pharmacist if you take any CNS depressants (sedatives, sleep aids, anti-anxiety drugs, or certain pain relievers) or thyroid hormone replacement therapy. Lemon balm may add to the sedating effects of CNS depressants and may interfere with how well your thyroid medication works.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
If you're looking for support with cold sores, stress, or low mood and you don't take CNS depressants or thyroid medication, lemon balm extract is worth considering—it's generally well tolerated short-term. If you do take either of those drug types, or if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your own doctor or pharmacist first.
Keep use short-term unless you've talked it over with your healthcare provider.

Lemon Balm extract monograph & interactionsLemon Balm Extract by Nootropics Depot Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Nootropics Depot's Lemon Balm Extract contains one active ingredient—lemon balm—which does interact with certain medications.
The most serious concern is a moderate-severity interaction with CNS depressants (drugs that slow the central nervous system, like sedatives, sleep aids, and some pain relievers): lemon balm itself has CNS depressant activity, so taking it alongside these medications could add to their drowsy or sedating effects.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Lemon balm also has a documented moderate-severity interaction with thyroid hormone replacement therapy. In the lab, compounds in lemon balm bind to thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and block its normal receptor activity.
Animal studies show the extract can lower thyroid hormone levels, so it may interfere with how well your thyroid medication works.
Altogether, these interactions span 264 individual medications. Use the search tool on this page to check whether any of your current prescriptions fall into these categories before you start this product.

Lemon Balm extract
Cns Depressants
Theoretically, concomitant use of lemon balm might have additive effects with CNS depressant drugs.
Lemon balm seems to have CNS depressant activity in animals and in humans.
Thyroid Hormone
Theoretically, lemon balm might interfere with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
In vitro, constituents of lemon balm extract bind to thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), preventing TSH receptor-binding and leading to the inhibition of TSH-stimulated adenylate cyclase activity. In animals, lemon balm extract has been shown to decrease levels of circulating TSH and inhibit thyroid secretion.
