Calamus has been studied for bronchitis, asthma, anorexia nervosa, and cancer, but we don't hold reliable evidence to rate its effectiveness for any of those conditions. Neither ingredient has a strong evidence base in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Both ingredients carry serious safety cautions. Lobelia is toxic at higher doses — even doses as low as 50 mg can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, tremors, and throat irritation.
At 600 mg or higher, lobelia toxicity can produce sweating, rapid heart rate, convulsions, low blood pressure, and in severe cases, death. Calamus poses additional concerns: some forms contain beta-asarone, a compound the FDA has banned from food because it may cause cancer.
Calamus can also cause nausea, vomiting, rapid heart rate, and in rare cases, intestinal paralysis. The safety data strongly advises against both ingredients during pregnancy and while breastfeeding due to toxicity concerns and lack of safety data.

Lithium
Lobelia is thought to have diuretic properties. Theoretically, due to these potential diuretic effects, lobelia might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium. The dose of lithium might need to be decreased.
