Lotus Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Herbal Terra
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Lotus against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: Lotus Stem Extract in dried form. The liquid also includes alcohol, water, and glycerin as inactive ingredients to deliver the extract.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence for lotus stem extract isn't established in the data we hold. We have insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for nausea and vomiting, sore throat (pharyngitis), insomnia, weight loss (obesity), heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), or bleeding disorders.
If you're looking at this for one of those uses, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about what the science actually supports.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Lotus root is common as a food, but supplement safety hasn't been well studied in humans — especially at medicinal doses. The main adverse effect on record is allergic reactions: some people develop hives or contact dermatitis (a skin rash from touching it) after eating or handling lotus root.
There isn't enough safety data for concentrated supplements while breastfeeding, so avoid it during lactation. If you're pregnant, there's no safety rating on file, so talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check with your pharmacist if you use blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs (Moderate risk of increased bleeding), diabetes medications (Moderate risk of low blood sugar), or pentobarbital or other sedatives (Moderate risk of extra drowsiness). Use our medication checker on this page for your specific prescriptions.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Lotus Stem Extract may appeal to you if you're interested in traditional uses, but the evidence for its benefits isn't solid in the data we hold. If you take blood thinners, diabetes drugs, or sedatives, this product needs a pharmacist check first.
Allergic reactions are possible, and breastfeeding safety data isn't there — talk to your pharmacist before you start.

Lotus by Herbal Terra Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Herbal Terra's Lotus Stem Extract is a single-ingredient liquid that does interact with medications.
The most serious concern is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs (like aspirin or clopidogrel). Lotus contains compounds that can thin your blood further, raising the risk of bleeding.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
It also pairs with caution around diabetes medications. Lotus may lower blood sugar on its own, so taking it alongside diabetes drugs could drop your levels too far.
If you use insulin or oral diabetes medication, you'd need close blood sugar monitoring and possibly a dose adjustment.
One more: pentobarbital (a sedative called Nembutal) may cause extra drowsiness if combined with lotus, though this is based on animal research and hasn't been confirmed in humans. Altogether, these interactions span 211 individual medications.

Lotus Stem Extract, Dry
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, concurrent use of lotus with other antiplatelet drugs might reduce platelet aggregation and increase the risk of bleeding.
Neferine and isoliensinine, constituents of lotus, have been shown to inhibit platelet aggregation, in vitro. These constituents can inhibit the production of pro-aggregating factors like prostaglandins.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, lotus might have additive effects with antidiabetes drugs and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Animal research shows that the ethanolic extract of lotus reduces blood glucose levels and potentiates the effects of injected insulin. Monitor blood glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments might be necessary.
Pentobarbital (Nembutal)
Theoretically, taking lotus concomitantly with pentobarbital might increase sedation.
Animal research shows that lotus extract increases pentobarbitone-induced sleeping time. It is not known if this occurs in humans or if this effect occurs with other barbiturates or sedatives.
