Lung & Respiration + is a liquid supplement with 7 active ingredients chosen for respiratory support. The formula includes marshmallow root extract, astragalus root extract, osha root extract, oregano leaf extract, peppermint extract, mullein leaf extract, and lungwort extract, plus an extract blend.
The inactive ingredients are glycerin and purified water. Marshmallow root, astragalus, and mullein are traditional demulcents and tonics; oregano and peppermint are aromatic extracts; osha root and lungwort are folk respiratory remedies.
Each brings different plant compounds thought to support lung function, though the strength of evidence for any of them is limited.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for most ingredients in this formula isn't well established. For peppermint, we do have solid support—it's likely effective for irritable bowel syndrome and possibly effective for indigestion, nausea from chemotherapy, and discomfort during medical procedures.
However, peppermint's primary benefit is digestive, not respiratory. For the other active ingredients—marshmallow root, astragalus, osha, oregano leaf, mullein leaf, and lungwort—we hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate how well they work.
That doesn't mean they don't; it means human studies are limited or absent in the data we have. If you're looking for respiratory support, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about what the current research actually shows for the condition you're targeting.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Most of these ingredients are generally well tolerated for short-term use, though human safety data are limited for marshmallow root, astragalus, mullein leaf, and osha root. Peppermint and oregano leaf are safe in food amounts; concentrated supplements are stronger and less studied.
Peppermint is likely safe in pregnancy and lactation in normal food amounts, but oregano supplement amounts should be avoided in pregnancy (food amounts are probably fine) and concentrated oregano supplements aren't well studied in breastfeeding. For the others, safety data in pregnancy and lactation are too sparse to recommend them—osha root is considered likely unsafe in pregnancy and should be avoided.
No safety data exist to evaluate them during breastfeeding. A small number of people have reported allergic reactions to oregano and peppermint (ranging from mild rash to anaphylaxis in rare cases).
Oregano and peppermint can also cause gastrointestinal upset or, topically, skin irritation.

The most serious concern is peppermint's Moderate interaction with drugs metabolized by the liver enzyme CYP3A4 (such as certain blood pressure medications, immunosuppressants, and statins)—peppermint can increase their levels in your bloodstream.

Marshmallow root and astragalus root both carry Moderate interactions with lithium, a mood-stabilizing medication; both may theoretically reduce how your kidneys clear lithium, raising its levels dangerously. Astragalus also interacts Moderately with immunosuppressants (drugs that weaken your immune system on purpose, like those given after transplants), potentially reducing their effectiveness.
Additionally, astragalus and oregano leaf both carry Moderate interactions with diabetes drugs—both may increase the risk of low blood sugar. Oregano also has a Moderate interaction with blood thinners (anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs) and may increase bleeding risk.
Peppermint carries additional Moderate interactions with other liver-metabolized drugs: CYP2C9 and CYP2C19 substrates (used for blood thinning, seizures, and other conditions) and cyclosporine (an immunosuppressant). Marshmallow root has a Minor interaction with oral medications generally—its mucilage may reduce how well they're absorbed—and a Minor interaction with blood thinners.

Marshmallow Root Extract
Lithium
Theoretically, due to potential diuretic effects, marshmallow might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium.
Marshmallow is thought to have diuretic properties. To avoid lithium toxicity, the dose of lithium might need to be decreased when used with marshmallow.
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, marshmallow flower might have antiplatelet effects.
Animal research suggests that marshmallow flower extract has antiplatelet effects. However, the root and leaf of marshmallow, not the flower, are the plant parts most commonly found in dietary supplements. Theoretically, use of marshmallow flower with anticoagulant/antiplatelet drugs can have additive effects, and might increase the risk for bleeding in some patients.
Oral Drugs
Theoretically, mucilage in marshmallow might impair absorption of oral drugs.
Marshmallow contains mucilage which can affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take marshmallow 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
Peppermint extract
Cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune)
Theoretically, peppermint oil might increase the levels and adverse effects of cyclosporine.
In animal research, peppermint oil inhibits cyclosporine metabolism and increases cyclosporine levels. Inhibition of cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) may be partially responsible for this interaction. An interaction between peppermint oil and cyclosporine has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates
Theoretically, peppermint might increase the levels of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro research shows that peppermint oil inhibits CYP2C19. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, peppermint might increase the levels of CYP2C9 substrates.
In vitro research shows that peppermint oil inhibits CYP2C9. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, peppermint might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
Clinical research in healthy volunteers shows that a single dose of peppermint oil 600 mg inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes and increases the AUC of felodipine, a CYP3A4 substrate. However, in vitro research suggests that peppermint oil only inhibits CYP3A4 at very high concentrations.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, peppermint might increase the levels of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro and animal research shows that peppermint oil and peppermint leaf inhibit CYP1A2. However, in clinical research, peppermint tea did not significantly affect the metabolism of caffeine, a CYP1A2 substrate. It is possible that the 6-day duration of treatment may have been too short to identify a difference.
Astragalus Root Extract
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking astragalus with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Clinical research in humans shows that astragalus might have hypoglycemic effects. Theoretically, taking astragalus, especially in combination with other hypoglycemic agents, might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Cyclophosphamide
Theoretically, astragalus might interfere with cyclophosphamide therapy.
Evidence regarding the effect of astragalus on immunosuppression caused by cyclophosphamide is conflicting. Some animal research suggests that astragalus reverses cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppression. However, other animal research shows no effect.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, astragalus might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
Astragalus seems to stimulate immune function. Theoretically, taking astragalus might decrease the effects of immunosuppressive therapy.
Lithium
Theoretically, astragalus might increase levels and adverse effects of lithium.
Animal research suggests that astragalus has diuretic properties. Theoretically, due to this diuretic effect, astragalus might reduce excretion and increase levels of lithium.
Oregano Leaf Extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, oregano might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro research shows that aristolochic acid isolated from oregano leaves has antithrombin activity. It has also been reported that oregano oil inhibits arachidonic acid-induced, and ADP-induced, platelet aggregation.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, oregano might increase the risk for hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
In vitro and animal research shows that oregano extracts might lower blood glucose levels.
Mullein Leaf Extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Lab tests on extracts from different parts of common and dense-flowered mullein plants show that they do have some blood-thinning effects, as they increase the time it takes for blood to clot. This is likely due to at least one of the known constituents of muellein, triterpenoid saponins. However, the effects appear to be mild and results have been inconsistent. Extracts from different plant parts have been show to have varying anticoagulant strengths, with water-based ones being more potent than alcohol-based extracts.
