HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Lutein 12 by ProCaps Laboratories
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Lutein 12 contains 3 active ingredients. The main players are lutein and zeaxanthin complex—both are carotenoids (plant pigments) that concentrate in the eye, especially the macula (the part that handles sharp, detailed vision).
The product also contains omega-3 fatty acids and alpha-linolenic acid for additional nutritional support. Stearidonic acid rounds out the formula.
The capsule itself is a soft-gelatin form, which is an inactive ingredient.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Zeaxanthin has been rated possibly effective for age-related macular degeneration (AMD)—a common cause of vision loss as we age. For zeaxanthin's other studied uses—age-related cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease, asthma, breast cancer, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia—the evidence in our data is insufficient to make a reliable rating.
Lutein and the omega-3 components in this product don't have effectiveness ratings on file here, so we can't comment on what the research shows for those.
How safe is it?
Some data gaps
Zeaxanthin is generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses. For pregnancy, the safety data on concentrated supplements isn't well studied, so use caution—dietary amounts from food are fine, but talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking a supplement form while pregnant.
The same goes for breastfeeding: food sources are safe, but there isn't enough data on concentrated supplements, so get personalized advice before you use one.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take antidiabetes drugs (blood sugar medications), double-check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting—zeaxanthin in this product may theoretically increase the risk of low blood sugar. For all other medications, use the interaction checker on this page to search your exact drugs against the product.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and some safety-information gaps remain.
Lutein 12 may be worth considering if you're concerned about age-related eye health, especially macular degeneration, though the evidence for zeaxanthin is rated only as possibly effective. If you take blood sugar medications, check with your doctor or pharmacist first—the zeaxanthin in this product could theoretically lower your blood sugar further.
Either way, talk it over with your own healthcare provider to see if it fits your needs.

12 mg Natural Lutein 600 mcg Zeaxanthin
Andrew Lessman's Lutein 12 is an ultra-high potency source of Lutein - A powerful, protective carotenoid that experts consider absolutely essential to healthy vision. Diets rich in lutein have long been associated with superior eye health; and more recently brain health. Lutein is most highly concentrated in the retina and macula of the eye where its unique structure allows it to protect these delicate tissues from high-energy radiation and oxidation. Lutein, along with Zeaxanthin, are so highly concentrated in the retina and macula that they provide both its color and its name, since the Latin name for the macula is the macula lutea or yellow spot. Lutein, along with Zeaxanthin, are referred to as optical pigments, since they play a key role in the eye’s visual systems promoting visual acuity (sharpness of vision), protective optical filtration, as well as visual processing speed. Lutein should be at the top of any list of ingredients to protect our eyes from a lifetime of normal age-related changes. Substantial recent research has also shown that lutein levels are associated with superior cognitive function, memory and verbal fluency as we age. Unfortunately, the body cannot produce lutein and the typical American diet provides very little, which makes supplementations the only viable option to provide our eyes and brain adequate amounts of these essential protective nutrients.

Omega-3
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, DHA may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Although some clinical evidence suggests that DHA might reduce collagen-stimulated platelet aggregation and thromboxane release, most clinical evidence suggests that DHA alone does not affect blood clotting. However, theoretically, when given in combination with EPA as fish oil, concomitant use with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs (including aspirin) might increase risk of bleeding.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking DHA with antidiabetes drugs might reduce the effects of these medications.
In people with type 2 diabetes, including those taking oral hypoglycemic medications, DHA seems to increase fasting blood glucose levels.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking DHA with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Fish oils containing DHA can lower blood pressure and might have additive effects in patients treated with antihypertensives; use with caution.
