Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

This liquid contains one active ingredient: Magnolia Bark Extract (dried form). The extract is suspended in a base of alcohol, water, and glycerin.

Insufficient evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Insufficient

There isn't enough reliable clinical evidence to rate this product's ingredients for its stated purpose.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: Anxiety, stress, sleep, and digestive support.
  • We looked for evidence on: Anxiety, Stress, Sleep quality, Digestive health.
  • The closest evidence on file: Magnolia is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Anxiety (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Magnolia is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Stress.

Magnolia Bark Extract has been studied mainly for gum health. The evidence suggests it's possibly effective for gingivitis (inflamed gums), though the data is still limited.

For hay fever and anxiety, the evidence we hold isn't strong enough to rate it either way. For dental plaque, the research hasn't established reliable effectiveness.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

When taken by mouth, magnolia bark extract is generally well tolerated in most adults, but human safety data is limited and short-term use only is recommended. The product should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding—there isn't enough safety information, and some sources raise concerns about effects on the uterus and no reliable data exists for nursing.

Topical use can occasionally cause contact dermatitis. In trials, a small number of participants reported side effects like fatigue, headache, hand tremors, and numbness around the mouth, though it's unclear whether magnolia or other ingredients were responsible.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with insufficient evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Magnolia Bark Extract may help with gum inflammation if the limited evidence pans out for you. But it's not for you if you take blood thinners or heavy sedatives without checking first.

Pregnant and nursing folks should skip it. Run your medications through our checker before you start.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Theoretically, magnolia might have additive effects and increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro research shows that the chemicals magnolol and honokiol, isolated from magnolia bark, inhibit platelet aggregation that is experimentally induced by collagen and arachidonic acid. However, they do not inhibit platelet aggregation that is induced by adenosine diphosphate, platelet-activating factor, or thrombin. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cns Depressants

Theoretically, concomitant use of large doses of magnolia bark and CNS depressants might have additive effects.
In vitro and animal research shows that constituents extracted from magnolia bark, especially honokiol and magnolol, have sedative effects. These effects may be due to the inhibition of catecholamine release and modulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid-A (GABA-A) receptors.

Yes. Based on its ingredients, Magnolia has a known interaction with 351 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Magnolia contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.

The safety data we have is limited to short-term use in adults. We don't have enough information about what happens with prolonged use, so talk with your pharmacist about how long you plan to take it.
Can I take this while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. The facts advise against it during pregnancy because there isn't enough safety information and some sources raise concerns about effects on the uterus. Breastfeeding is also not recommended due to lack of reliable safety data.
Does magnolia bark help with anxiety?
The evidence isn't strong enough to rate it either way for anxiety. While lab studies show some calming effects, we don't have enough reliable human research yet.
